We are planning a trip to Inhaca the 17th of March, going to stay at the tent camp at Ponta Torres. We are only 2 people going there with 2 skis. Our big problem is getting our gear there have heard you are only allowed 20kg on the Vodacom ferry and ski's are not allowed on the government ferry and cant get departure times and the cost of the ferries. We were even thinking of driving to Santa Maria and get a dhow from there to take us over. Any feedback and information would be appreciated.

Log on to Inhaca.co.mz
You will find contact details for the ferry operator- Andre.
Im sure if you chat to him he will sort things out for you.
I definately took much more than 20kg on the ferry.
Th problem is going to be, getting from the ferry drop off to ponta torres.

To start off, we phoned a suppose to be good contact in Inhaca and he told as not to worry he has got his own Dhow and that he will pick us up at Porta de Pesca in Maputu at 10H00 on the Monday, so we arrived there at 09H30 and no lift, after an hour we phoned this suppose to be good contact just to find out they have only left Inhaca. He eventually arrived there after 3 in the afternoon but not with his own dhow. Ready for the trip we want to get on but then again it is not happening, the dhow leaves only at 1 in the morning so we hit the pubs and explore Maputu till 10 at night. Wanting to get a bit of shut eye we try to sleep but if you get in the Pick-up the mozzies tackles you and outside it is freezing cold. 01H00 arrives and no skipper after trying to talk to some people there that cant understand a word we are saying we eventually found out the port captain has got a lot of issues and that we will only leave at 3, so we wait some more. 03h00 arrived and with everybody waiting and the port captain walking around with a gun in his hand trying to enforce his power we only left after 4 with a dhow that is packed to its limits. It is very cold and wet and our suppose to be good contact told us not to worry he will organize his fathers boat to take us to Ponta Torres. We arrive at the hotel on Inhaca very tired and cold and no boat so after again a long discussion we got a lift with a very nice guy called Pirri Pirri that gave us a lift (R400 later) to the camp site well close to the camp site, we had to walk about 500 meters with all our gear to the camp site. Camping there was an amazing experience; we didn’t want to leave the place. As it was both of our first experience on a fishing ski and we weren’t very well organized, couldn’t do drop shots in the channels that is recommended in the bay because we didn’t had an anchor and forgot the life jackets at home and it was full moon so was a bit sceptic going in to the sea but it was amazing just paddling around the bay, we have spend about 6 hours a day on the ski’s it is an extremely beautiful place. We have only landed 2 fishes but the prawns are very cheap so we had quite a bit of that.

It was time to go back so we called a taxi (another R400) Arriving at the hotel just to find out the ferry is still not working and we were to late to take the dhow we had to spend the night and with very little money and no place to sleep we parked on the peer between the locals that look after the boat, they are very friendly. That night sitting on the peer drinking their local rum with no ice we were already discussing our next trip back but this time going via Santa Maria to the village their and then take a dhow over to the camp site. It cost us about R1400 just to get from Maputu to the camp site and back. The camp site has no facilities and cost about R30 p/p per night. They have gaurds their 24 hours that look after your place when you go out and they supply you with fire wood. There is a village on the other side of the bay at Santa Maria there you can buy supplies and very nice big prawns but no ice we paid about R45 for 2kg of prawns.

hi boats.
Im sorry to hear that you got ripped off. Unfortunately that is how things work on Inhaca. If you havend delt through the right people you will pay too mutch for everything, As well as being let down.
Where did you stay? Inhaca lodge or Inhacazul?
Also - whas the dhow owners name Juliass or captain, by any chance?
Did you contact Andre from the website? The vodacom ferry operator.

Thanks for the info, we wanted to phone him but were recommended by a friend to phone the guy on Inhaca they always use him but they have got their own boat.

The name sound very familiar, we didn’t talk to him everything was organized through this other guy. Although we were ripped off and everything was a mission getting there and back it was worth it. We stayed at the camp in the reserve at Ponta Torres about 800m from devils gate. As I said there is nothing there just a long drop, u go and bath in the sea u use this cheap Palmolive apple shampoo it works very well in the salt water. There is a reef right on the side that goes down about 15 meters that is protected and with amazing sea life. You are not allowed to fish there so it is very well protected. We have only found out the second last day exactly were to fish and what to do, the locals there are very friendly and helpful except in the villages where they just want to rip you off. We are planning our next trip. Apparently the road to Santa Maria is not to bad it takes about 4 hours just to go through Elephant park but drivable. You can park your car at the village and take a dhow to the camp site for about 200mets but can only be done on high tide. There is no need to book you just arrive there and pay the gaurds for the duration of your stay.

This is directly across Hells gate. Taken from the Island.
Thats the funny thing about Inhaca. Even the people that get a bad deal always want to go back.
