I'm going to Knysna over December, and would really appreciate some tips on what dropshot lures etc to use , some info on fishing spots inc Lagoon and other info such as which tide produces best catches etc etc.

All and any info would be great.

Hi Minnow

I agree everyone's a bit tight lipped. Anyhow i've spoken to some other drop shotters i know and they recon camo worm ,pearl shad 4", blood worm should form part of your tackle for Knysna. Some spots they've mentioned :
1. Under the train bridge, on a pushing tide.
2. under car bridge close to Crab's Creek.
3. Off Belvidere

Hope this helps you out a bit.Send me a private message and we can exchange numbers, maybe meet up for some fishing.

Hello Guys

I have grown up around Knysna and know the lagoon very well. I fish it often off of a fishing ski and my target species would normally be leeries. Decmber is really not a great time of year to fish on the lagoon as the traffic gets out of hand. My suggestion would be to fish from 4:30 - 07:00 every morning and then pack your bongos and spend the day exploring the rest that the town has to offer. The reason that I say this is that the fish have had an evenings peace and are will not be as spooked.

knysna lagoon is a big piece of water and the key is to find the fish. Fishing from the side does limit ones ability to do so but good fish can still be caught.

I would fish the area around the train bridge on a dead low for leeries and cob. There is a bank above the bridge where the channel is very close to. Walk on the bridge until you reach the bank and then jump onto into. The main road should be behind you with the bridge to your left. Small surface plugs should give you a few leeries. One can expect fish up to 8kg at this spot on the low. Average sige 3-3.5 kg. One can use any minnow for cob so long as you can get it on or near to the bottom.

Another good place on the low is the front of Leisure Isle on the low. One can walk out onto the edge of the main channel. Target species would be leeries or shad and then also grunter and steenbras. me not a fundi on grunter and steenbras on dropshot but I have caught many here drifting a sandprawn with the current using only a hook and split shot.

In the evenings on a full tide one can always get a few shad off of Thesens Jetty where Tapas used to be.

To really target cob I would fish the piece of water above the White Bridge. This is the area near Crabs Creek but higher up the river. You can go further up than the White Bridge to the broken bridge and fish there for cob. Some good size fish have been coming out on live bait recently in this area. Small leeries up to 2 kg should also be about. Tide is not that important as the fish tend to stay in that area. Low tide makes it easier to taget the cob as they will tend to hold in the deepest parts of the river.

The backside of Leisure Isle ie to the right of the small boat harbour also has good numbers of leeries and some good size fish. Best to fish here on the full tide. One generally has to wade quite a distance to fish the channel but this place works as there is very little boat traffic here.

A mistake that many folks make in the lagoon is that they tend to fish the cleanest water that they can. My experience is that the fish take more aggressively in slightly discoulered water, especialy when using lures. The fish are very shy in clear water.

Another spot htat can work on the full tide is the top of the ashmead channel. Kind of behing where the Kwik Spar and Dirk Ellis Motors is. Again one can get both grunter and leerie here. Some humdinger Striped Mullet. Chum and area with frosen mix of bread, minced sardine, anchovie oil on the low tide and then fish with bread and sardine on the high. Can get fish over 3 kg.

Good Luck

Anton

Hello Mate

Your possibilities with a boat are far greater. Weather looking poor till Thursday.

For Leeries I would troll mullet on circle hooks till you find a fish and then start throwing plugs. Best spot = main channel in front of Tapas/Parks Board on low tide. Once boats start moving one can go home. Ashmead channel good too. Try trolling mullet very slowly in the area around the cement block on the first 2 hours of the drop. Troll two rods without sinkers and two with the small bass sinkers that they use above a Carolina Rig. There are some nice cod about at the moment and they will have a go at the mullet with the sinkers.

I would also target the area above the White Bridge for cob trolling mullet with sinkers. Early morning again the best. Another good area for cob is the channel next to the main channel that goes past St James Club/Sass's. As you come past Salt River you go more left than usual and follow that channel until you see oyster beds on your right. Can be very good because few boats go there. Can catch good grunter  here but known for cob. One can anchor here. I would fish it mid tide on the push. While waiting throw plug for leerie.

If you looking to have a chance at a trophy leerie you can troll big mullet (500 - 600 grams) on the dead low near the heads. best area = the mouth of the false channel just off of the old wreck. the wreck is marked with a pole.

Great spot for grunter is what is known as the donkey bridge channel. Difficult to get in there on the low. One has to come in past lake Brenton. There is a narrow channel with oyster beds on the right. and the donkey bridge channel will be on your left. Fish the channel with the oyster beds to your right on pushing tide. Your casts should be landing just short of the mouth to the Donkey Bridge Channel. Again this is a place where other boats should not disturb you.

Good Luck

A big tip when targeting cob with live mullet on the troll is to try and troll into the current or into the wind and just get hte boat in gear. The best is if you can troll into both. Hint: The slower the better.

Good Luck

Haakies,

You should be commended for the great info you have provided on Knysna Lagoon, this is much appreciated I am sure. I have spent many a family holiday and done quite a bit of work in Knysna. I love the place, but have not really been too successful fishing there...largely as a result of limited local knowledge. I will most certainly be using your tips on my next trip there, so thanks very much for sharing.

Regards, Shuff

Well done Minnow

I tried for a bit on Christmas day but it was a little disappointing. I managed 1 small leerie on a plug and did not see another fish. The big east that is going to blow today may help a bit due to the water temp dropping. Easier to find fish as they tend to move further up the river to where the water temp remains more constant. This is when one has a better chance of catching cob above White bridge. Spring tide also helps.

Good Luck Anton

Hi guys,

I might be in Knysna on Thursday morning and could fish for a few hours. With a short amount of time and lightweight gear where would you recommend I throw a line?

Cheers,

Guys just one question....Where is the White bradge?
The White bridge is the big white bridge you drive over when you come from George/Wilderness side into Knysna... It's just after the Belvidere/Brenton turn off

Sorry I couldnt help with fishing spots on this thread... I dont know much about fishing in Knysna, but I'll share what little I know when I get some time

Yes, the White bridge is next to Lightleys. I've seen some pretty decent grunter come out just above the White bridge on high tide and have also caught cob there. Also heard that the leeries patrol that area, though haven't personally caught any there.

Haakies, I've finally managed to corner my first Knysna lagoon cob for this holiday and, I kid you not, it weighed exactly 3.05kg. How that for setting accurate targets? Tomorrow is my last fishing day in Knysna, so planning on getting up at 04H00 and giving it a good bash. Hoping for a size steenbras...................
