This is Seriously something to be concerned about.

I've heard of Anglers worst friend being skin cancer on areas exposed to the sun while fishing.

Close Angling friend of mine had to have cancer recently removed from face.

I've come across a product in a handy sachet format in its infancy stage,and thought I'd do research on it for initiator,as it appealed to me as an angler.

Walt i've been mocked and laughed at... but you won't find me fishing without my broad rimmed hat, my second skin to my arms, long pants and a pop up colar. Even then i don't leave the house without factor 40 or more on, and i have a aerosol can to top up during a fishing outing.

It takes 5 minutes before you leave the house and 2 minutes while you are fishing.

ja guys the sun is no joke these days , i have had cancer cut out of my lip . Not cool .

now i cover up , everybody should . Atleast have proper lipice and a 30plus factor in every tackle box , i own !

Skin Cancer poses a HUGE threat to all of us. We have a high incidence in our family, and this is something I take VERY seriously.

All Fishing apparel we use (and sell) is UPF rated 30+. Minimum.

Nice "looking" blingy fishing shirts (blazoned with "Branding") that has not been DESIGNED to PROTECT the wearer from the harsh effects of the sun? A definite No No!

I ALWAYS fish with long-sleeve shirt (with high UPF rating), and use SP20 sun cream! The most EFFECTIVE water-proof stuff we have ever used (Ask Noweeds and Nepptune?).

I also wear gloves when on the boat Jigging or popping (also with sun protection) as well as to protect my "soft hands LOL!" from braid cuts, sharp scutes on GT etc.

Absolutely guys! Safety 1st! Prevention is better than cure........

UV Sachet manufacturer/supplier has asked for some research on this product in satchet format and needs some feedback to get it onto the market.So,if you're willing to respond,much appreciated.

1)Would Sunscreen sachets suffice as a means to lower risk of Skin Cancer?  

2)Would Anglers be interested in purchasing UV Sunscreen in Satchet format?

3)How would smaller sachets compare with bottles?

4)What price would be fair to charge for each sachet?

5)How many should be in a pack?In 10's?20's?100's?

6)Where would you like to buy sachets?Agent?shop?

7)Agents?To go Nationwide or even international, to cover wide spectrum,supplier would like agents.Any recommendations?Ideas?(Perhaps those who'd like to supplement their incomes could become agents)

We shot the pic on the opening page by the way, take a guess where its shot..Was an absolute mission I can tell you... everyone in that shot is placed to the centimetre!!!
Its a Danish product, and is the business... expensive, but worth it.

For my face ( lips, nose etc ) there is only one SUnscreen, Island Tribe - http://www.islandtribe.co.za/site/products
Make sure you gel the gel, not the lotion. 8 hours 100% protection, 100% waterproof...

Add to this I always wear a SPF shirt of some sort, either our Columbia Bonehead JSA shirts, or a Airwick type SPF second skin, I have a couple Pelagic ones which I use, and they are awesome.

A Hat is non negotiable, as are a quality pair of sunnies.
Add a buff in the mix, and you are sorted.

Like RB mentions, don't forget the backs of your hands, these are HIGH RISH areas! I always make sure to be extra careful with applying sunscreen to my hands. I also wear gloves for most jigging and popping applications.

The sun is not your friend, take care out there!

I do wear sunglass(but to be able to see the water better)

I seldom wear a hat as it pi55es me off during a fight and irritates me while i am sweating.

I put on sunscrean on my face(only becuase the gf moans about my tomato look for the next week)

i wear a long sleaved fishing shirt or fishing jacket(beacuse i bought for winter and i cant afford other shirts at the moment)

Lip-ice (i bite my own damn lips if i get bored what would this help for[the biting])

So i think i am set up for the summer.

PS what about the tackle??reel covers?throw water over your baby(reel) if she gets hot.take my rod for a swim now and then(wading) Sh!t just woke up outa my dream.

Shot 'Dre (I meant P20) but somehow managed to squeeze a "S" in anyway....... an old age thing.

Serious stuff this. My Dad and Little sister are both receiving treatment every few months, and I have a few "nasties - on the backs of my hands!!! that will have to be biopsied in the next month or so - after return from Hells Gate". All those years without gloves.......... if I could turn back the clock?

To say that I sleep well every night (because it is a concern) would be a fib.

The "Pink Fillet" ladies are also focussed on this, and like Walt has suggested - new ideas like dispensing from Sachets are great!

Potential issues?

1) are the sachets biodegradeable? We would generally re-apply on the boat, and wind can blow them overboard etc.

2) They would have to be quite large. I SMEAR the stuff on libererally!!!!

3) The "muti" would have to be top-notch stuff. ie Long wearing, and water-proof.

nothing is worse than some sunscrean in your eyes. So i've also shopped around till i found what i need.

Roy i'm considering the gloves, as my hands is the only one part left that i often burn to a crisp is my hands.

One of my main problems, being on a ski boat, is when I get sea spay in my face, it make the sun cream/spray go into my eyes and it burns like hell. Has this product been tested for eye irritation?

Marthin Bro, THAT is exactly the reason we use P20!!!!! It doesn't run into your eyes when you sweat. (I sweat like a pig!) and if the sweat runs in your eyes - it's only sweat!

P20 PENETRATES and protects! I generally apply (heavily, the stuff stinks, about an hour before we launch)and then am hundreds for the rest of the day! Including saltwater spray on the run out, the occasional swim (if there are no higher order feeders in the food chain around) etc.

In Feb we were in Costa Rica for 2 weeks. (if you want to be in an environment where you sweat, go there)

There were times that I had NO SHIRT on for more than half a day at a time - at sea on a boat! NO Sunburn - in fact after 2 weeks in CR, I almost had no tan!

I became a believer after that trip......

The sun can be deceiving, the PE boys will know all too well, been fishing when the sun is hiding behind the clouds thinking that there is no direct sun on my skin, only to get back home later in the evening to find that I am red as a tomatoe from being wind burnt

So i always make sure i take sunblock along

have a skin that burns easy, so the best advice i got once is to use the suncreens that is made for babies. generally it does not burn eyes,its non greasy and really works well as baby skins are fair in complection. so far i have been sorted, but then again i always wear longsleeve jacket rain or sunshine and my thin but windproof pants!

Neptune , is spot on , i use Island tribe , pretty expensive but you get it in 50plus , wear as normal sunscreens are 30 .A bit of plain old sink .the white paste you can buy for cheap at any Pharmacy , mix a bit with sunscreen , i use this for my Ears [wingnuts] nose and lips doesnt come of easily, so no re alply stories !


The Waterbabies are great for guys with sensitive skin ,and work just as good . the Sprayon oils i have seen to make a comeback , but i dont use that .
One tip i can give guys thats heading out to sea on a boat, the glare can hammer you on a windless day ,and also result in sunburn under you nose , ears and cheek bones , not cool .

Been using the Beyond Coastal sunscreen for a while now. Works Beutifully. Have to agree with Kopstamp, the baby sunscreen also works lekker. Having a farely sun-sensitive skin I have to apply thick layers of the stuff.

Other than that I wear a Broad rimmed hat, Oakley Polarised Sunglasses (Love then to bits!), rash vest, my Sealine shirt and from now on in summer it will be my wetsuit pants or farmer john. Don't care how hot it gets.

I agree - BABY BLOCK SUNCSREEN - with long sleeve 2nd skins, hat and Cargo pants that can zip up legs on / off. Shoes if on rocks - wet suit shoes if on beach. I dont muck around with the sun.

good post guys, i think a lot of people dont realise that skin cancer( melanoma ) is one of the most aggressive and deadly of cancers, many cancer fatalities begin with the humble melanoma and spread to other areas of the body.
i use one of those cheesy looking 'mullet' peak caps, the ones with the flap at the back that completely covers the ears and neck( prime cancer areas) , looks wierd but works like a charm.
