Don't know how you guys do it..... Max cast for me is 100m on a good day, been fishing for quite some time now, but I've never gone to a field to practice. Maybe must start getting my 150 cast in per week like Reefman said, wonder if it would help, or is it a case of you either got it or you don't?

What works for me is 1X old penn 500 with line marked at 100,150 and 200m. I initially put the 500 on my rod cast the line out on the beach, then set up a mark at 100m and 200m in the sand with a visual mark at 150m...(usually a sand spike with an orange bag tied to it) then all I do is measure with a tape measure from the closest of these marks to where my sinker lands...

I must admit casting far has its advantages I recall fishing at the spits in the 2006 Nationals at the west coast - there was a lad from WP who could cast a hell of a shot my jaw dropped just waching this bloke he must have averaged 170m with a bait! And yes he got some of the many spotties that came out that day!

Its like reefman says, Practice, Practice. Up here in Gp i get with a Pentagon HMG Heavy and a six ounce sinker, between 140 and 160m + no problem. Its all about the practice.

Reefman - Is the line counter that device that you clip onto your rod with the small wheel and counter. If it is, do you cast with it clipped on, or do you clip it on when you retrieve line after a cast?

RynoHyman - How far did you cast with the sl50? Would you say that the reel alone gave you that distance, or was it a lot of PRACTICE with the new reel? Im asking because it is quite obvious that one has a 100% better chance to be succesful if you can cast 140m+?

Thats the one I use. Usually measure my distance when I'm Retrieving my line.

And just remember if you cast far you can always roll in to the closer spots NEVER HEARD OF ANYBODY ROLLING OUT TO GET TO THE FAR SPOTS.LOL

One spot that I have seen distance always give the angler an edge and one type of fishing that distance is almost always better is fishing for Big predators ie shark.

From Maseppa the gurranteed area for a pickup is to East South East of the point. There is however generally a bank at around 120m. With the sea working it tumbles the bait and keeps pushing it up the line.

I watched a PMB local Mookesh fishing there, he is an angler that really nails a 9oz on a Blade and when he got back off the point after casting his Nylon Topshot was all off his reel, he put the lead down at least 170m (200m topshot over whiplash) He went tight 3 times to everyone else's 0, problem was he got cleaned out all 3 times.

I fished NE of the bank into a hole closer to island and picked up 3 raggies but none of the steamtrains that he got on - because I couldn't get over the bank.

Same thing at Kleinkrantz in March (Wilderness) The guys fishing into the hole got many pickups but only landed a biggest bronzie of 45kg. with awade and long cast I got over the 2nd bank twice and got 2 Bronzies 85 and 110kg.

As mentioned in the sl50 forum, i explained that i just do not get along with my sl50. The sl50 i got 90m and improved to 140 with saltist. Bought myself a saltist and wow. Casting with the saltist the same way as the sl50 the sinker just kept on going, and going, and going. Sure its got something to do with the infinity spool.Im also sure it's go something to do with finding the rod and reel's sweet spot.

I'd have to see a 160m cast first. Not saying it cant be done more like would love to experience it.

I also feel a 100m cast is very good going. RN maybe we underestimate ourselves, and should measure how far we cast at some stage.

Marthin... come to one of our GP socials... we'll show you a few 190m casts, a couple of 170's.... every weekend. Maybe even a 200m bomb from Enigma? Yeah and maybe you're underestimating how far you guys are casting.

Either a line-counter when casting in the dam, or if on a field, a measured out distance with a builders tape measure...

Best cast I witnessed was 246m with a 5oz weight but it was on a Casting rod with a mag'd Abu and 0.35mm line

Cast was by Francois Pienaar (not the rugby player) he was then a Casting champion.

Best cast recorded and big hype about it was an 8oz on a casting rod with the Phoenix reel with a tapered Grizzley spool filled with 0.16mm line and that one was measured at over 330m

Reefman, remember my 200+ is with a Grinder and 0.20mm line otherwise no way.

I'm back on my counting while casting.

I know it's difficult to wrap your head around but it does work. With competition angling in freshwater it's paramount to keep your baits in the feeding zone and with night fishing to get it right cast after cast I use the counting method.

Counting from when you release the line / spool till countdown or as in my case during night comp fishing feather the line off the reel and stop it when it reaches the required distance.

I've tested this over thousands of casts, during practise sessions now I count each cast and then measure it using a line mate and the corrolation remains the same whether you use a 1oz or an 8oz.

The count must be a continuous count, counting the full number without interruption.

Try it and then you can get a good idea of how far you are casting and how far those around you are casting.

It might just also help you see if you're underestimating your cast or others are over estimating theirs and you might just see that the guy next to you is casting 20m further and therefore over a bank and getting the fish, it might look like you're casting just as far as your fishing partner but if he's catching and you're not - "COUNT HIS CAST AND ADJUST YOUS UP OR DOWN ACCORDINGLY AND I'M SURE YOU'LL START CATCHING".

With my counts on the cast I now have the following as guideline distances:

Counts Distance
16 80m
18 100m
20 120m
23 135m
26 160m

One of those massive casts on youtube 240m+ I counted 34 counts from the release to impact.

MYself with slide tackle 8oz, 13; 6-8oz HMG and a Torium 30 with 0.55mm line average 24 counts with a best ever of 26 off of Mazeppa and that resulted in a pickup that cleaned me out (Mookesh was averageing 28 counts per cast with a best of 29)
