Illegal competition

Hi everyone! Went to a comp this weekend and caught some nice carp and a big mouth yellow of 3kg and my cat of 11kg. At weigh in there was a guy with some monsters haha 13kg who won afterwords I congratulated him and asked what bait he used. He replied with platties. I then asked the organizer if this is legal and he said yes. This is against the law as far as I know and could cause problems for the main sponsor Mutual and federal. Allot of guys was very angry and me to as we worked hard to catch bait and prepared it right to get some descent cats. Who can help with this situation??

It is not illegal to fish with dead Platties and only in the Cape is possession of the Cape Clawless Toad (Plattie) an offence.

If they never clearly stated at the opening or in the competition rules that Platties are banned for the comp, the angler didn't do anything wrong...... IMO

I asked the tackle store owner in alberton and he said it's only the cape plattie that is illegal to have and use as bait.

Any animal which have a vertebrae are illegal to use as bait alive. This includes Platannas. The issue surrounding the Cape Platanna is because it is indangered. This is the main reason why you are not allowed to have it in your possesion, dead or alive. And if the Cape Platanna cross breads with other species Platannas the result is a sterial mutant male Platanna. Thus putting more strain on the already indangered Cape Platanna and because of this reason you are also not allowed to have other species (dead or alive) Platannas in your possesion in the Cape province.

You just repeated what we all said here.

Fact is if I use Platties (dead) I am not breaking a law.

Fact is if the organisers of the comp didn't stipulate before or during the Comp that Platties are a banned bait then the angler using them was within the law.

as for your comment in terms of Live Vertebrates..... I've mentioned it many times all through the Barbel forum in my attempt to get the guys to stop the use and advertising the use of Live fish as bait for Barbel.

Enigma I use to be a uge suporter of live bait but leaned allot through time. Do not play ur club cards on this forum as I try to stick to rules and lisence rules

SAFBAF has purposes of control banned the use of Platties, live, dead or in pieces. Clubs are not required to implement this but are encouraged to implement this. However at Inter Club leagues, Provincial and National matches it is enforced.

Your License only prohibits the use of Live Bait (Vertebrates)so in an Open Competition ie a money comp that is not regulated by or fished under SAFBAF rules then one may use a dead plattie.

I don't understand your commend about me playing a club rules card? I never ever mentioned anything about a Club at any time until now and then only in reference to your comments about clubs.

My appologies I must have missed it where anybody explained WHY it is illegal to use the Cape Platanna other than it having a vertebra.

Just for interest sake but I speak under correction with this one; the ban on using the Cape Plattie as live bait was put into place (because it was endangered) years before it was declared illegal to use Platties because they do have a vertebra.

The platties that were used was alive and thus making it illegal. I am not a sour looser but I try to fish by the rule and I feel in a competition like this rules should count for every one. Skuim I'm in for a clinic?
