I'd like to spend a week or so in Natal in August

I'd like to spend a week or so in Natal in August to get away from the miserable weather in Cape Town at that time.

My fishing here is spinning from the side for leervis (garrick) and yellowtail. I wouldn't mind if I could get to a place where I can try for kingfish. Is that likely in winter? And where's a nice place with accommodation nearby?

I'd appreciate some advice.

Where exactly would you like to stay? From Margate to Umhlanga Rocks all along the coast at that part of the year is ripe with shad, garrick, kingies . My favorite place to spin for Kingies was of the S/pier in Dbn unfortunately the pier is closed off to fisherman now. As the sun rises over the water with a spoon the best action ever!

Garrick on live shad always at Blue Lagoon, Shad is all over the place....

Man, I haven't really decided. We (my wife and I) want to spend a few days in Durban -- eat some curry, go to the aquarium etc. -- and then spend a week or so where there's fishing & beaching. Ideally self-catering cottage near the beach and not too far from the fishing?

Hey Gawie, I'm an ex banana and if i were you i would look at the south coast rather. Far more cottages to rent right on the beaches, and the fishing spots are a bit more accessible with roads running to all spots. The south coast is a bit more rocky too which will allow you to find some good spots to get into deeper water. North coast has long stretches of beach sometimes only accessible at certain points, and then have to walk the stretch. Besides the south coast is such a gem, and will hold a bit more entertainment for your lady.
August month, not sure if its quite 100% couta time,(the winter couta season is April til after the sard run) but the natal snoek should be around then. Not a set rule tho.
Enjoy!

Hey, thanks for all the helpful responses!

I suppose I don't really have to go in August. Any time after the winter school holidays is fine by me. Or even before, if that's much better.

I've got a hangup about kingfish -- never gonna get one in my part of the country.

The South Coast makes sense, with rocky points and accessibility. Never been there, but I've heard it's a bit overcooked with resorts and what not. And overfished?

I'm not really looking for variety. I'm fairly boring and will be quiet happy if I can get to a point that I can have confidence in and just flog the water there for days on end!

So, to refine my query, perhaps the answer I'm looking for is:

"You want to catch a kingfish from the side? Then you absolutely must go to xxx place at xxx time."

The xxx place would be moz at the least, and the xxx time would be summer at perfect...

Lol all these xxx are putting ideas in my head...lol..

Back to business though...my comment above is not hard and fast rule, fish gotta eat right? But to my vague knowledge kingfish are also warm water temperate so winter months mights be a hopefull....

You should have some better luck with some garrick though...

OK...here goes.

Last August (2007) a couple of mates and i went down to Hibberdene on south coast. Theres a dive school there and we spoke to the guy. He says that there is prolific garrick and kingies as well as kob around. I had a few nasty pulls and a good couple of big shad.

I agree with Patrick, South Coast in June/July would be my choice I have caught shad almost throw for throw off the rocks at Umzumbe/Stiebel Rocks in July - on most mornings you can get your quota of 4 shad within an hour or so.(get some slow S shad spoons and some ondas)
If you are lucky enough you may even get to witness the 'Greatest shoal on Earth' which believe me is awesome.

I agree 100% with Master A - if you seriously looking to target Kingies, then I suggest to go far North (Cape Vidal - Kosi Bay) in the summer months.

August is prime Garrick time, specially Beachwood and Tongaat Long beach stretches.

Another idea - the sardine run starts +/- end June, why not make it around that time. This is the best time in Winter to get those Kingies.

Well, I'm convinced: in winter go to the south coast and try for garrick. It's almost a relief ... it's what I do here in summer and it's something I know and love.

Seems like, for kingfish, I'll also have to plan a summer trip to the far north. (Except, summer's very nice here too. It's in winter that I want to run away.) But I'm sure I can tear myself away and put up with some really warm water and subtropical fish!

Howzit Gawie

I have heard of big Ignobilis Kingies coming out fairly regularly in the Scottburgh area during the sard run - on spoon. However, if you're dead set on having a good chances of hooking into one, save your leave and your money till summer and head off to Moz. There are a few places I could name there where big Ignobilis Kingies are a tackle busting nuisance!

[align=left]Hey, why can't I go to the south coast in winter and to Moz in summer? I've been threatening to go for years, but it's a hell of a drive from Cape Town, and it's not cheap to fly either. Also, I'm always weary of going a long way, to a strange place, specially to fish. Inevitably you figure out the place and conditions the morning before you leave. Or you realize that you should've gone to the other place a little further on. But I think if I can get some good advice on when and where to go, I'm about ripe for a trip to Moz.

Sard season on the South Coast in June, and then Kingie sport in Sept-Oct?

Hello Gawie

I see that you list Stuisbaai as your favourite angling spot and that you spin/plug for leeries and yellowtail. Is there a spot at Stuisbaai where one can throw for these fish from the side. The reason i ask is that I am from George and I spin/plug for leeires a lot here but have to make trips to Cape Twon for Yellowtail. Struisbaai would be quite a bit more convenient as it is a bit closer for me to go for a few days.

I would really appreciate any advice that you might have.

Have you got a cell number for me. You don't have to go all the way to Moz. for Kingies. Rocky Bay in the Scottburgh area will give you all the Kingfish action you need. I on the other hand would love to get stuck into the "Tails" from the Cape. Like to exchange info. Email me your number and i'll give you a ring.
