What are the requirements for a boat to enter and leave Durban Harbor? What categories are allowed to enter and exit via the Channel? Information on this is not easy to find. Yes I will ask the Club safety officer, but wanted other input in the meantime.
The reason I'm asking is that I have just upgraded my boat from a Baronet 17ft to a Flamingo 216, which is one hell of an upgrade. We enjoy night fishing in the harbor as a family, so we had to look for something a little bigger.
The boat is fitted with a 150HP engine and can be surveyed to CAT D or E. However, what is allowed out of the bay and what is not?
I also read that you need a CAT-C skipper's license, which is fine. I have no problem with that and am planning on getting it regardless.
But I read somewhere about CAT-D being allowed out, but only in tandem with another boat. This will be an issue as I don't want to rely on someone else to escort me in or out.
So this got me thinking, is there any notice anywhere that states that CAT-C needs two equal engines? Bearing in mind I don't want to venture out too far and especially not out of sight of land. Cat-C states that each engine must be capable of propelling the vessel in its fully loaded condition at a speed of at least 5 knots, my little 5hp can do that as 5.2knots is the hull speed of my boat, I could chuck a 15hp on there and it aint going to go faster.
Now I know I probably should/will save some bucks and trade my 2011 freshwater low 60 hour Yamaha 150 for two 90's but this will take me 18 months while I pay off the new boat so my question is would I be able to get away with registering my boat as Cat-C with a 150hp and a 5hp kicker?
My boat is not made for surf launches, and I don't ever plan on doing surf launches. I simply want to be allowed to leave the harbor on clear weather days catch some fish and come back in when I want, the Capetown guys are so lucky with your protected launches and Cat D and E
