I recently went to Groenpunt for 3 days of "getting outta Joburg fishing". Weather was awesome (unlike now). Plan was to target anything that wanted to bite.
Stuck out a far cast into the stream using a large honey floatie and a shortish one into the pool area targeting carp (normal mielie bom and dough).
Was busy washing my hands when my alarm on the long rod starting squealing. Didnt feel that big until it got close to the bank and saw that it was a large mouth yellow between 3-3.5 kg's. With my drag set to max thinking it was a tiddler, it snapped my 10LB hook line like cotton.
After bashing my head against a tree a few times for being such a hasty poepol i reloaded the same and again sent in another long cast. My smaller carp rod goes a few minutes later and i reel in a small carp of 0.4 KG's. The carp is completely black in colour......Anyways caught a few of these during the course of the 3 days.
Was catching a lot of small carp and small mouth yellows an a few muddies in between. At least i was kept busy which i prefer. Nothing worse in my opinion sitting there for hours just catching mossie bites and buggerall.
On the 1st night it was quite chilly. But ive been fishing for most of my life and i was well prepared. My trusty vat of "ou bru skoene" was nearby for the odd gulp every now and again when fishing at night. Any good angler will tell you "pasop" of too much of this ant-freeze. If you've never had an Old Brown babberaas, then you werent cold enough yet....
Anyways caught another 3 large mouths over the next two days, mainly late afternoon ranging between 2.5 and 2 KG's. All my fish were released as i dont have space in my 'beemers' boot for keep nets and all the unnecessary crap required on such expeditions.
I did notice plenty dead fish floating around but decided to put in a barbel rod over most of the time i spent there, loaded with my "R10 bloody each" platties. Didnt have a bite so i set him free after casting him in and out of the Vaal River for 3 days. The bugger desrved to live. I let the other 4 go as well, and thought i coulda bought another 6 Amstels for that frigging 50 bucks. Ah well, win some lose some.....
So im hoping the weather warms up, so i can go again soon. Im after that 5Kg+
P.S. No one bothers you there in the week. So dont tell anybody i told you's.
