We did bait fishing as well,I only used circle c hooks and light weights up to 5 ounce .

The tackle i took was the following

6ft drop shot rod and shimano Slade reel loaded with 20 pound braid(fishing the lagoon)
2.7 meter light spinning rod with raging bull reel loaded with 35pound braid

Assassin Med hmg  with daiwa saltist 30 reel and 13kg mono for spinning

waft light rod for spinning with Trinidad 14

But next trip I am taking a Heavy type Coffee  grinder rod and reel for the TARPON with.Loaded with 50 pound braid.

A short jigging rod will do ,there is no deep water jigging but only about 7 meters, in the lagoon but you need something to lift the big Snappers

I caught a 35 kg snapper on a spoon at Rio Longa.

The one in the night Pic I caught on a SEA IRON LURE.
the other pic in the thread about GABON (fishing report) was caught by jigging a mullet on the bottom.

I have caught snapper on surface poppers ,creating a big splash draws these fish from the bottom up ,like kingies..
How ever we caught one at the KWANZA on a KONA ,believe it or not .

I have found that dark colors for these fish work bets when popping for them in early or late light conditions,but during the day anything lighter on a slow retrieve.

You will have to guide me one of this days on shore casting, probably next year trip to Angola I might join you guys this side of the border...

Carlos is one of the best, I'll probably book a couple of trips with him for Tarpoon next season.

But my dream is big cubera on a casting stick from boat, I've had many here in Luanda but not that big, that's why I was asking about GABON popping from boat spots.


When I dive I still see some HUGE Cubera's around but not on my casting stick unfortunatly.

This is more or less the size I've been catching last couple of years, I want bigger...

Nice fish.
What i reckon you should do is fish productive areas and work the surface with big poppers I have caught them in Gabon in that way, jerking  the poppers creating the splash and then leaving it and doing the same again  .

That's what I do, but I think they are fewer and the bigger ones are in shallower areas that on popper stick you will loose them (2/3 meters deep).

I've jigged that wreck here is a cob from there.
