Hi Spyker, a group of us are looking at doing a trip to Gabon early next year. i see that the lodges are extremely expensive. would there be any alternative, accomadation wise. Maybe a campsite in the loango area

Hi Spyker, see you've been fishing at Loango. I am currently in Gabon for three months. At the moment in a place called Mayumba. Fishing here sucks. Got a few small barracuda on spoon, but fished on the river today with livebait, not a thing. Locals have hammered this area. My question. Did you do any surf fishing when you were at Loango. Looks quite good about 20km or so down the coast from here. Wondered what to expect in the surf? When I walk around here with a fishing rod the locals look at me like I'm a crazy white man. Plenty of oil platforms out here as well, but at the moment the water is muddy brown.

They fish both the surf and river, i have done a bit of research for Gabon next year , St Chatrines beachcamp will be our place to stay ,

From what i have spoken to the lodge in St Chatrines , Threadfin , cuberas , cob they call it some other name up there , Jacks and Tarpon , o yes and Barracouda , you can also PM Carlos Moran he gave me a bit of info too.

Thanks for the reply. Yup, it is now a few weeks later, I am still in Mayumba. Have managed to find a few deep spots in the river here that hold some reasonable cuberas. Biggest I have caught is about 5kg, but got run into the logs and shit by much bigger fish. As for the rest, still pretty poor. I have so far found three species of "cob" here:
Pseudotolithus senegalensis (Has diagonal stripes, otherwise looks like a silver cob)
Pseudotolithus typus - Otolith Cob

Argyrosomus regius (Very similar to our dusky cob)

If you go  to my website. http://www.southseasafaris.co.za and look on the fishing report, then click Gabon, you will see pictures of about a 12kg Psuedotolithus senagalensis in amongst the photos.
The camp you are referring to is on the Iguela river and by the sounds of things, (I am going up there for a month shortly, but have not yet been there) it is about the only really good fishing area left along this coast. It is on the Loango National Park. Plenty of game, primates and of course fish.
