just an update, a friend of mine imported 2 HDS 10 units from the USA, the geofenced units still work 100% the only difference is that you get a small annyoying message that flashes on the screen "not for use in this area bla bla bla"
and Units convert to Ft and Miles thats it!

He saved about R35K on his purchase exactly half of what it would have cost here.

I am considering a purchase of these units for myself but its a bit out of my league at the moment even with the 1/2 pricing from the USA :alien

I found the pricing from Cactus navigation in the UK actually cheaper than from the US. PLus the units come with world base maps. None of the problems the US base map units have in our area. Only catch is warranty as Fishton mentioned

You still have a warranty! You just have to pay for postage there and back again. For the amount to save on the initial cost that is negligible and there is little chance of anything going wrong anyway.

My boat has all locally bought and fitted equipment and I am supporting Lowrance S.A. But I cannot make up all sorts of excuses as to why it costs more here.  What can we do if they are cheaper in the States? I certainly can't run around talking crap about our economy and how many billions is spent on fishing world wide etc. etc. Guys here just aren't that stupid!

Why is it that so many things are so much more expensive here in SA, I am not just talking about Electronics, but also Motors, Lures, Rods etc.

Somehow I think that the public is getting tired of getting ripped off and this is the reason people are looking overseas for their stuff because the savings can be substantial. Look a Rapala's, import them direct and you save more than 50%, same goes for Scotties where the saving is even more than 50% and this is not buying direct, it is buying from a retailer overseas who is still making a profit. And these savings are taking shipping and duties etc. into account.

Recently someone imported a 300HP outboard motor direct from a dealer in the States. Saved himself R110 000.
Locally it would have cost R250 000, he paid R140 000.

Boats take up a lot of space in a container, so the shipping costs play a bigger role. But of course local agents add a huge margin as they are the sole importers and supply an "imported" product.

Yebo Yes!  The more we spend locally the quicker the prices will come down.  Look at how the 5" units are just about on par with the US market already (see my earlier post comparing the Elite-5).

There was a law suite against Apple Computer because they only allowed a certain company the rights to import their product into South Africa. Mac works out 120% more expensive than in the states.

THey lost with the competition commission ordering them to open up import channels to other distributors.

Then why does a Toyota built here in SA cost half the SA price in Dubai Mombakkie?
