I HAVE to buy a 3 piece spinning rod (easier to transport on planes) and reel combo. Will be fishing of the beach and around some oil rig pipelines in Pointe-Noir, Republic of Congo. As I don't know what to expect (specie wise) I would like to get a "allrounder" rod and reel - line class  - 20 pd braid.

If you had to go and fish "blind" what would you buy?

Reel I'd say any good name brand. Salina good with drag. BG = Tough

Thanks Fly Guy - I will start shopping around. No decent fisherman can go to another country with some coast line and NOT take a rod and some lures. I have read some articles here on Sealine about chisselnose plugs and need to get some. I do not think I will get the distance with Rapala type lures. Poppers, plugs and spoons. What's your feeling on this.

Be sure to take a Halco Max or two with! Its weighted so you can cast it relatively far or you can troll it and some guys even jig with it. Iv seen pics of big dogtooth caught on them. Id take a 5000 size reel. And also be sure to take extra braid with so when you get smoked you can respool and do it again! :)

I would think that this rod will handle bigger lures.

I have also had lots of success with Yozuri Hydro pencils and the new Sashimi Sliders; but remove the hooks on these and replace with either Gamakatsu, Owner or Mustad hooks.

Living outside the RS of A myself I know what it is like to see all the water and the fish and not have the right kit! (Luckily those days are over now!)

Hello Mate

Very difficult to give advice until you have a reasonable idea of what you will be targeting. I recently went on a pluggin trip to Oz and the rod that worked well for me was a Blue Marlin 3 piece that has 2 tips. It is a 12 ft rod and has good backbone. I fished it with Sl50sh, purely for line capacity. We ended up using .70 mainline just so we could pull hard enough. If you interested give Roy Bennett a call. He sells Blue Marlin blanks and has one of these with him at the moment. Your tackle shop may need to order the blank for you. Roy 083 289 6676. He will know the rod. Tell him that it is the one that Anton took to OZ.

I trimmed the medium tip 3 inches and the light tip 6. I built the rod with no power butting. If you want you can put a pop up guide as it helps with casting. Use oversize guides just in case you want to through a decent leader at some point.

This is naturally only a choice if you looking for an overhead/multiplier option. I am in the process of getting a spinning option together. I have a 10000 Stella that I need to pair with a spinning rod of 9'2 - 9'6 that can really pull. Having trouble finding such a weapon.

Hi Johan,

How is the search going? If all else fail try the TFO S703H, rated 10 -25lbs 1/2 oz -1 1/2 oz, caught lots of Dorado, Cutas, Tuna's and Queenfish on them this season. Used them with lures, jigs, spoons, poppers and will work for Drop shot as well!
If you have time on your side, replace the tip guides!

If you're going to be fishing off the beach as well, then my choice would be the Shimano Exage 10ft rod... an unbelievable machine. Rated to throw up to 7oz plugs/poppers - it has the backbone to stop just about anything and also the length and flex to be able to cast miles. I have one joined up to a Stella 6000 and it works mighty fine.

There is only 1 rod for this, the new Shimano Aeroflex which is an 8ft 3 peice rod and can handle anything.

have to agree with fly guy & fishing adv - the shimano aerocast is a supurb option. they are available at basil manning. as mentioned take extra braid as well as some sub surface throwing lures like the onde onde or gummy flash (cheaper local version). enjoy and post pics

I was in this situation when I worked in Angola.

I bought a Shimano Exage 11FT casting rod for the Trini 16 and the 10FT spinning rod for the 8000 Stradic.

These combinations worked great from the beach for casting plugs, spoons ect.

From the beach you should get fish like Jack Cravelle and Senegal Jacks all part of the king fish (travelly) family.

If you are going to be fishing from a boat the rod Fly Guy is showing in the photos TFO is a great boat rod. Put a 4000 stradic on with 10 lbs fire line and you will have a great set up for casting light lures but good back bone fighting good size fish.


Make your own rod tube by using a pvc drain pipe with end caps. This is not problem on the airlines.

Yes, I am planning to take up a small duck and fish around the old pipeline pylons so boat fishing will be the in thing. :kaykakBut I will be working in the harbour as well and then plan to spin from the warf. Spinning around the Loeme and Kouilou river mouths as well. I will use the advice from the guys and see with what I can come up. Want to keep it light and simple. Spinning with an unbalanced outfit is no fun.

Then the Shimano Exage 10ft spinning rod and 8000 Stradic for spinning from the warf. I loaded 55lbs Saltiga casting braid on the reel and it cast a plug a mile.

The TFO with 4000 Stradic with 10lbs fire line will be a good setup.

Also look at the Berkley Air rods
