I have surfed the web, read numerous posts regarding fishfinders, spoken to friends who own them and I am not convinced that fishfinders are used to their full potential. It is an amazing tool that can be used to your advantage but if you do not know exactly what each piece of displayed information means and interprets why the heck have one. So how does one go about learning its proper use and capability without re-inventing the wheel? Are there training courses that one can attend.

You can read the book and learn to interpret the colours and shapes and how to identify fish in clutter or even recognise different fish species by the showing. But for the most part it comes with time and experience. When catching bait, we can just about recognise the bait we are looking for. Example, long columns normally means mackerel. You learn over time how to look for what in the different areas you are fishing and times of year. The best beginners advice is to go to one of Fishtons seminars. He will teach you the basics and even more importantly how to use the machine. Many guys don't know how to set it up for different conditions. I am always adjusting the settings depending on depth, speed, water conditions and clutter.

Thanks Bennie,

Its exactly my point. You know whats happening below you, you know what to target and what your setup must look like to maximise your chances. On the weekend we were getting snagged up 50% of the time and nobody on the boat could make an accurate assesment of what our problems were, we lost a lot of fish. I dont think that I'm alone in this department and a seminar will be great.

Hi Fishton

 

Do still have any units? i'm looking at the x - 67c. its for a witblits and i already have a handheld gps. i'l be mostly fishing the mossel bay- bay area and river systems, ( gourits and breede) any help would be much appreciated
