I have recently gone fishing for the first time this year.Only to find out that my Saltist in free spool was awfully tight.So much so that I could throw without applying pressure to the spool.I went home and oiled my reel through the holes near the star drag,thinking this would solve the problem.Although with no change.A few weeks later the shad was boiling when I arrived at the beach.I threw and instantly got hit,but when I struck the reel peeled line on the tightest drag.What is going on?

Take the reel for a proper service with a reputable guy ! Probably just needs a bit of maintenance on the bearings and clutch !

Mine did the same. There is a plastic (not very good) clip inside the reel that breaks. I took it to Murchissons in Durban and the guy swopped it for me with one of his display reels and charged me about R 50 or so only. He said it was quiet a common problem. Has worked fine since. Had a 450 + m run from blacktip before getting broken off no problems.

Hi Bud

Loosen the screws on the left side plate remove spool then oil both bearings left and right side then remove spool tension know oil the white bush then put oil on the spoolshaft espcially when the cutt outs are machines on the spoolshaft fit and spin.

Let me know how is goes it should be fine now.    

If still tight its more likely th eright side bearing is seizing or the left in that order.

Use ONLY synthetic oils.
