i have noticed from the fishing videos that i have been watching that the guys use the mushroom type sinkers for holding their ground feed . i have always used the plastic dart type ones .

is there some special advantage to the mushroom type sinkers ?

Hi enverh.
I won't say it is better than the darts but sometimes I think the darts scares the fish off. We fish only with the darts if there is a lot of grass and hookup's in the water.
The mushroom sinkers will balance a bom nicely and you should be able to cast it further than the darts.

If the wind is howling just use the M1.5 or M2. Don't go to heavy with the sinkers. If there is no wind try the M0 or M1. And Bloemhof likes FX, Banjo and Molasse.

I used to struggle casting with a mushroom sinker so I switched to a very small dart resting on a halfround sinker. This worked great, but recently I tried using a slightly bigger mushroom (M2.5) sinker and this made a big difference in my casting. The smaller ones just would not let me cast hard enough even though I tried different combinations with my groundfeed. The problem being that the mieliebomb should not be to hard and take to long to disperse in the water.

Thats true Naruto. The bom should not be to hard. Rather make it a bit "pap" and then let it wind dry a bit. Put the bom on over the line and the "stem" part of the sinker and let the bom "rest" on the bottom part of the sinker.

In winter I think it is best to start out plain. Its easier to add than to subtract something from your feed.

In my fishing experience I find the Mushroom type sinker the most effective. I have tried the plastic dart type and the spring type and the results are not the same. Downside is its not easy to cast the Mushroom type sinker the Mielie bomb falls off.

Hi there Naruto

Had the same problem and found that it was my rods. Sounds strange but with my bazookas I can’t go smaller that an m1.5 without buggering it up. It looks like I am making a feeding ground for the entire bank. LOL – I think those rods are to stiff for cutch a small weight.

What rods do you have? Maybe that could be the case for you as well?

Always plain feed for bloemhof!!!

I do not use the darts at all. I will rather angle with one hook if there is obstructions in the water.
Start with a M1.5 – M2 this will help you with your casting because you will be able to feel the weight when casting. Perfect your technique and go smaller on the weight.

I have switched from M-sinkers to Torpedo bom holders.

Im more confident with my casting and I'm hitting the target area more consistent. I havent tried it in the Vaal yet, but am confident that I will have good success.

Since this post I have changed to The Original feed and upgraded to M0 sinkers. I make the bomb very small. I have the 12' Sensation Bazookas and getting to 100m is not a problem. Since this change I can make my trace lighter as well and it deffinately gets the fish on the bite easier.

I have heard from a view guys that are very happy with the Original feed. I have not tried it my self but will do so this weekend at out club comp. I now only use my bazookas if I need to go over 120m and with a M2-3 I get gr8 distance.

I only fish with M weights when fishing 10gr M00, 14gr M0, 20gr M1 and 25gr M1.5

When distance casting we use P4 (2oz), 3oz and 4oz

When making the bom up make it wet and quite soft. Allow it to draw water for 20 minutes before starting to fish. If it is then a bit wet ad a little bit of dry feed to bind it.

This way the feed is saturated and wil break up every time and you won't pull the bol out.

Take a handful of feed, knead it in your hand binding it before applying it. make a roundish bol, push it over the line till the line is central and then slide it down onto the weight.

The M weight's base must protrude from the bottom of the bol.

Now knead the bol and shape it in a taper to the top, this will prevent the bol from pulling through in the cast.

Hang the trace in your hand and test the balalnce of the bol by spinning the trace, if it wobbles slightly it will travel in a spiral when casting and cost you distance.

If it wobbles violently then it is off centre on the weight and will come off when you cast.

If it's not right do it again or you will cast the bol off.

I tested some Bazooka 12' rods and found the action to be very quick giving you one of the best value for money casting rods.

Tips for casting with such a stiff rod with small weights and a bol.

Make the drop from rod tip to trace at least to the 1st guide on the rod or even longer. I found the optimum was to have it half the length of the rod.

Swing the bait out and as the pressure is felt on your finger begin the cast (standing still) Rotate into the cast and punch it through the 10-2 oclock position ending with your rod in a 50 degree angle to the bank

We casted with M0 and feed on an average of 118m and M1 to 127m (0.35mm leader and 0.16mm Awa-Shima lines) With the M1.5 we averaged 144m. Not as good as the T53 or Prophets but good enough

Darts have more resistance in retrieving causing unnecessary load on the rod and are normally bulky and brightly coloured

The M sinker is way smaller for equivalent weight and has a smaller profile on the bottom adding to the finesse needed to up your bite tempo with Carp

I sometimes use springs with very sloppy bol especially when fishing for muddies or small carp at tempo
