I guess overall the Bank Angler magazine is the best of the local mags, when looking at carp-related material...And eventhough I give the editor a mouthfull now and then about certain comments in the mag, I do see that they are at least trying to keep everyone happy, most of the time...

But one can always be sure to find some funny stuff in there...

Like the 'bait recipes' book, advertised in the BA...here's some of the contents to be found in this book>

"Visgedrag en hengeltoerusting"

"beginsel van boiliehengel en ase"

"Kaarte en hengeldamme vir SA"

"BRAAI RESEPTE OM JOU VANGS TE GENIET"    ????

Quite ironic is the pic of a big specimen sized carp on the cover, lol!!!

I guess they might as well have used the following words in the advert:

"How to catch big carp and eat it"...!  (Hahahahaha)



PS - I'm sure the book contains some good informative stuff, so no offence to the writer/publisher... ;)

HoliMoloni! MC, As a specimen angler, I get too freaked out by that mag, actually any SA angling mags!

I'm sure as you say the editor is trying to please everybody, but sorry man, it just doesnt gel for me!

Braai tips for your catch! nogal.... geezzzz! I better not see that at a dam!

I really want to see some mag that is geared only to specimen, Just a simple mag, catch report(saying private dams no problems) some chit chat, basic tips, Bait/bait presentation, rig talk, a how to section..eg. pva bags, method feeders, secret stuff doesnt need to be known to all... articles on strategy, carp care, carp handling, carp fights, problematic tackle, good tackle, referance buying, comparrison hardware, latest and greatest equipment. etc etc etc! Something for the whole range of specimen angler, all levels.
Yes I understand, it could be used by others, but at least its safe tips and info, there is no way you'd be able to isolate a specific market, but it doesnt have to be that detailed, something is better than nothing...

Now that would be a mag man! lol!

I did have a sa mag that I used to buy, R15.00, but its off the market, it was called "Carp Fishing/Karp Hengel TOP TIPS"
and was like a kid in a candy store when it came out every month...lol! It had a few interesting articles. Like marker float work, throwing stick work, knots, Frequently asked questions etc. But it was also a bit limited..

yea i know, i have been very anti-bank angler for awhile.... but its the only local mag with an interesting big carp fishing article in it now and then, be it only John Dearden's articles that are worth reading. (Unless you're a newbie to the sport...)

not that I'm anywhere near being amongst the top anglers in SA, but there was a time where I wanted to send in an article to them, HAHAHAHAA!!!! yes, you may laugh, hehehe.

believe me, I also wish to one day see a truly dedicated big carp fishing mag, locally. But I doubt that would be soon... specimen carp anglers in SA are very tight lipped about their doings, their dams etc... so how does one get them to open up in a public magazine about that, hahaha...

The day we have a number of good syndicate type dams around, there will be more articles, cos then a guy can openly say "I caught a 38lb'er at the 'Tootix Syndicate' on Creamcracker boilies" cos he knows that only members are allowed to fish it, and it wont get flooded by the hook-n-cook brigade....

I do buy the CarpWold magazine every month, but one gets tired of it actually. The problem is that you know that the many pictures of big carp in those mags, actually gives you a false expectation of the size of carp you wont easily catch over here. And the methods they use over there, work so well to catch those big carp, cos they dont have many small carp anyway... not like us with a gazillion guppies piling into your bait!!!!
The part of CarpWorld that I actually like is the last section called "International Carper"... now and then you have very interesting articles by top big water carpers, tackling places that I assume is very similar to some of our waters, like Spain, Ebro, Chantecoq, etc... I've taken some good tips from such articles...

Anyway, I'm just babbling on now...sorry.

btw, if anyone's interested in some nice carp recipes just pm me, i got loads...
but remember, carp under 30lb don't taste good, the full flavour only develop in the nice big, fat ones.
i'm having a fish braai at my place on saturday, klippies & coke, rugby and a nice 40lb carp on the spit, spod you wanna come?

Klippies... there is no way Im eating any freshwater fish, except maybe a trout!

But as far as recepies, any thing Ocean Basket has on the menu, no problem.::S
