I am not a big fan of going to any dam in the Gauteng area over long weekends mostly due to the traffic on the dams getting very hectic on long weekends. So I decided to go to Bronkies on Thursday 30 April before the weekend. Bronkies is one of my favorate dams and I have caught some good fish there, aspecially during winter time.
Arrived at about 08:00 am got the boat in the water at Kaya Manzi after I had to produce COF certificate and Skipper license. We headed to river inlet with water temp at 60 degrees. The water had a lot of color and we had no joy in the dirty water. We moved to the bank at the Yacht Club and Demetri caught his first fish with his second cast using a Junebug Stretch 40. I had thee bites but lost all three fish and was starting to get annoyed with myself, I would strike and the fish would be on/off. Demetri landed another fish and I decided to move. We moved to the bank to the right of the Dam Wall. My first cast I again missed a fish and told Demetri to pitch his worm in the same spot, low and behold he caught another fish! This time his personal best weighing in at 1.43Kg.
Guess what now I really feel like an idiot, what was interesting about this fish I also had one of my engineers that work for me on the boat with me. He was fishing a Horny Todd at the time when Demetri was fighting his fish, his Todd was close to the boat and the bass actually took his todd as well during the fight! I must admit it is the first time in my live I saw something like this.
Back to my frustration, Demetri was now finding it amusing the fact that I have not landed a fish and he is three up already he's comment " Oupa ek sal jou wys hoe " and he did exactly that. I casted my fluke and he told me to leave it, not long and the fish was on. I then realised I had to deadstick and give the fish time to eat properly, from there onwards I started catching fish. Below is a photo of Demetri's biggest and PB, notice the finger on the mouth he is still a bit scared to hold the fish!
This is also the fish that took the Horny Todd whilst fighting.
We went on to have a pretty decent day and caught +- 25 fish between the three of us. The water temp did manage to get up to 66.5 degrees which help. The wind was hauling and very unpleasent. Below another good fish for Demetri.
I did end up catching more fish than Demetri but if I take biggest 5 fish bag Demetri kicked my and Jacques butts! Below is a photo to give you an idea of the size difference!
The baits that worked best:
Stretch 40 - Junebug, Watermelon Red Fluke, Junebug Horny Todd, Junebug Brush Hog and Lavender Shad Bill Norman.
The baits that was tops Stretch 40, Brush Hog.
REMEMBER TO NOT BE SCARED TO LEARN FROM OTHER PEOPLE
