I am going to be in Welkom over the next couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone had any info on the sand river weir area or anywhere you can catch bass in the area. I fished the sand river a couple of times over christmas and only managed one bite in about four trips. At the time the water was extremely dirty although the river looked like it had the possibility to be good. Non fishing local said that the river used to be full of Bass until floods a few years back?

Hi there,

This is one of the best places to fish if the water is clean.

We caught the following species there:

Bass, Barbel, Carp, Yellows, Kurper and wild Koi fish.

Bass is difficult there, but we have had great success with fly rods.

I have no idea what the water is like at the moment.  The stretch of water just in front of Tikwe lodge is good to get bass.  You will also see just across the river from Tikwe Lodge, there is a sign that says "No Fishing".  You normally get bass there as well.  It is a nice rocky drop off.

If you have the guts, you can also try and get to the Corobrick quarry.   Shitloads of bass in the quarry, but if they catch you fishing there, they will take all your fishing gear.

Thanks Marno. I thrashed the tikwe lodge area including the opposite bank bank on my inflatable - but nothing. The only bite comming from under one of the ski club jettys. - Where is the corobik quarry?

It is between Welkom and Odendaalsrus. How does the water look now? Still dirty?

I didn't get a chance to go fishing after all. I should be there over christmas though and will give it another go

Beware of Corobrik quarry - these people are in to harass people - they want to keep the water to themselves - they are not part of any government body - so I dare them to try take my stuff - they can only ask you to leave!

Have you fished Corobrik? Geez we had some nice fishing there but we sneaked in through the field.

Same here - sneaked in - what's nice is that it's only 5 mins drive from home.
Wanted to do some float tubing there, but those brick-packers spoiled my day.
In season I think it is one of the best places to be for bass. Saw some monster carp & baber there too!
