I am busy cleaning up the trailer of my Supercat 5

I am busy cleaning up the trailer of my Supercat 520. The trailer is galvanized but is in need of some TLC. A mate and I sanded it down, removing all the gunk. I am going to use NS1 rust convertor on the bits and bobs showing signs of rust. I am then going to coat the trailer with NS4. I have also just bought meranti planks to replace the running boards (damn, wood is expensive!).

Some questions:
1. What paint do I use over the NS4? I am looking for a paint that can handle a few knocks without chipping off.
2. What is the best treatment for the meranti? Is it Rubbol?

I got some advice from my brother-in-law: The paint to use on top of the NS4 is Polyurethane Twin Pack. I'll probably try to get the grey coloured one. Any other suggestions?

I still need to know if Rubbol is the best thing to treat the Meranti...

I went through the same exercise a few years ago.
I used Hammerite and Rubbol.
I guess it lasts for 6 years or so depending on useage.

Im watching this....my trailer fortunately is galvanized, but the axle and springs are rusty and need attention.

What are the better methods coating methods, as Im not into removing the whole contraption!

My 5c... For those contemplating a similar project, if you have not already bought timber, rather buy CCA treated pine, it will outlast Meranti by years and it will come in at a significantly lower cost.

Never had any experience with Rubbol, but my preference is to avoid membranous finishes (ie: a finish that forms a skin on drying) wherever possible. Timberlife make a good preservative called CTX100. I have had good results with it, just re-coating whenever necessary (dependent on how much exposure and to what elements).

What I can tell ypu about Ski boat trailer maintenance, mix your wheel bearing grease with Wynns Charge, the bearings will last twice as long before replacement is necessary. Rob O
