Hunting with silencers??

To the best of my knowledge you may hunt with a silenced rifle, however, unless the speed of the bullet is lower than the speed of sound, the sonic boom/crack defeats the use of a silencer. At best it will suppress the explosion. Furthermore the silencer/suppressor is so big and unwielding that it makes hunting with it impractical unless you shoot from a hide or the back of a bakkie.
The use of silencers on rifles as seen in movies is a lot of bollocks. It will only really work on a .22 rimfire (not allowed for hunting) when subsonic ammo is used and pistols with subsonic bullet speeds. Even silenced revolvers won`t really work as the boom of the exploding powder slips out from the gap between chamber and barrel.

@cornelius what you say is 100% true, but you clearly have not hunted with a silencer.(dont mean anything nasty about it). this is not giving you stick, but from experience a silencer is far more than a just about silencing the rifle.
1st silencer have been improved alot in the last couple of years! I am lucky to know the person that has made most of the developments.
2nd the biggest advantage a silencer does for a big rifle is reduce recoil. Example .270 winchester. Before the silencer one could not look through the scope during the whole shot, now I can and accuracy has improved 100% consistantly for all shots. The new foldback silencers allow only 12cm of silencer to stick over the rifles tip with 4times the amount of buffles than the previous designs.
3rd the noise from the rifle is significantly less and one strugles to pin point the location of the shot thus making it better to not spook all buck in the hunting area.

A LOT of misconceptions about silencers/suppressors.
They are NOT illegal, please produce any law stating otherwise.
A properly designed & fitted silencer will reduce gunshot noise, in some cases up to 80%.
It will reduce muzzle flash & blast.
It will reduce recoil ie making follow up shots easier.
It can confuse game as to the origin of the shot, thus giving you an advantage.
It can even tighten your groups,how? By acting as a damper at the muzzle end of your barrel. All barrels have "whip" as the bullet is forced down the bore, a longer thinner barrel will have more whip, than a shorter rigid one. This tuning of barrel harmonics can contribute to accuracy.
Your POI point of impact WILL change with the silencer on, so you need to re zero.
The ASE Utra silencer from Powder Keg in JHB is probably the best compact version in S.A
A silencer has numerous benefits, but the fitting should be done by an experienced competent gunsmith.

Silencers are NOT illegal. You can use them and most hunting farms prefer you to use it.
I use a silencer on my 30-06. It sounds like a 243 and has less kick than a 303. They prefer it if you use a silencer cause the animals dont stress and the game is not spooked.

I think the term "Silencer" is incorrect - they should be called "Suppressors" as this is exactly they do....
Even a .22 with subsonic ammo and quality "Silencer" still produces more sound around the face of the bolt (Primer) than out the front. I have culled extensively using Suppressors and they really work a treat...
What I think is also misinterpreted is that a suppressor forms part of the barrel - so effectively the barrel can thus be shortened and the silencer fitted and the original length and balance of the weapon retained
I am looking to have another rifle fitted with one but the guy I used to use unfortunately has moved onto happier hunting grounds - anyone got some good suggestions of where?

You`re right, I`ve not hunted with a silencer/suppressor but have fired a 3006 equipped with one. There certainly was a reduction in noise but being at the but end of the rifle didn`t notice any change in muzzle blast nor any reduction in recoil. As this happened many winters (15+) ago, the silencer/suppressor was an ugly affair about 300 to 350 mm long and 50 to 60 mm in diameter. I do have one on my .22 and with subsonic ammo the only sound from it is a "thop" about as loud as the crack from my Weirauch air pistol.
I`m sure technology has improved and that the new generation of suppressors will certainly give better results but since I have stopped hunting it won`t affect me in any way.

@cornelius I remember the first silemcer/supressor I saw also 15 years back, it was terrible, there was no difference at all.
Did not mean any disrespect with you not hunting with a silencer, just tried to illustrate the misconception people hav with silencers. It is just more than supressing sound as echo 7 stated.

Guys I have made a few it realy is not that dificult use the welsh plugs off a vw and look for a stainles pipe with the correct ID and work out the relevant volumes and remember that none off these folumes are aloud to be the same or devidedable via the first also your first/largest chamber must be closest to the barrel crown .It orks on the pricipal of sound resonance/sound waves to reduces loud bang .The vents and the direction and size off these vents leasons the recoil
