Hey guys,
was off to huisklip yesterday morning early before most of you were even thinking of getting ready for work!! got up at just pass 4am and picked up my brother on humansdorp @ 5am. the road is looking pretty sh!tty so beware if you are contemplating a trip there! even before entering the reserve on Chops' farm there is a very bad muddy patch to go back up against.. lots of big pools of water had me worried about the rest of the road down.. sent my brother down the hill with the torch and agreed on a signal for a good to go. the signal came and down i went. we reached rooibank just as dawn broke shivering from a deep wade through a freezing deep huisklip river coming down after all the rains. still using our headlamps to navigate through the water onto the rockies! lines in was just as we switched off the headlamps. unfortunately very dissapointing fishing which begs the question where did all the huisklip fish go?? we had absolutely stunning conditions, were there for pushing and dropping tide, chummed about 3kg of pillies. and not a single elf! we ended up calling it quits after 2 blacktail and a young steenbras and making a few more unsucsessfull casts on the surf as well. as usuall all fish released. the water was looking perfect and not even my light tackle slim spoon that never fails me could get me into any elf action!! this really had me thinking where all the fish have gone! a good thing though.. looks like fauna and flaura has finally set their eyes on this pristine fishing spot as we saw fresh vehicle tracks on the beach from the day before and while we were fishing a white bakkie came down the hill, DROVE ON THE BEACH, turned back at the deep river( same as the tracks of the previous day indicated) stopped at some fisherman had a talk and then drowe off back up the hill.. then the fishermen packed up and left minutes later.. looked like a bust?! anyway.. i an not very impressed and I am really hoping that this spot gets restored back to its previous glory!
the drive back up the hill was bumby to say the least, but made it out with quite some ease. if any wish to visit this place I would most definitely advise on 4x4, even if only to reach the top of the hill. going down certaily requires a good 4x4 and descent 4x4 experience as the rains made a mess of that road!
