Howzit guys,

I have been getting into spearing from my fishing ski recently. I am a student and am in need of a good recipe for homemade flashers. As I dive from a ski (using my ski as my bouy) advice on how to deploy them would be great too.

Any help is appreciated,

Hopefully see you in the water.

Nothing beats the papsak flasher. There is a DIY tutorial on it in the previous Ultimate Spearfishing mag.You can just hang it off the ski while you are in the water, the fish will be attracted to it and will come check you out out of curiosity as well.

Flashers can be made out of pretty much anything that will resemble a shoal of bait fish. The flasher that Capespearo is talking about will work just as well as the shop bought ones.

I have seen quite a few variations from a single Halco lure to 5 metres of squid and perspex shapes with reflective tape on.Everyone swears by their own design.Try a few different designs and see what works for you.

Noise/vibration also plays a part, some say the more noise it makes, the more the sharks come in.

Good luck - nothing better than a good fish coming up to your flasher.

Hi

Flashers work!

And they seem to bring in the bronzies as well. Fishing tackle shops has reflective tape. You can buy small 15 cm rulers from CNA  for a few rand. Burn a hole at one end of the ruler and stick on some reflective tape.

If you want to give it more action hold a lighter under the ruler for a few seconds and you ca make it a bit less straight.

Use a swivel to attach the rulers to the main line.

At the bottom you can put a Halco but I am scared that the rattle is appealing to sharks. I take a trolling squid and a ball sinker for the bottom for weight.

When you are out looking for kreef in Buffels bring your float toward you with your gun facing down the line. If anything is eyeing out the flasher the sudden movement might bring them closer in.

Sometimes the bigger yellowtail don't shoal up but hang around in groups or just a handful.

Like the Scouts say "Be Prepared"!

Hi Capespearo, roryf and jb2

Thanks a lot for all the advice. Will definately be making up my own set and trying it out. Will let you know of any potential success. Capespearo - I saw on another post that you shot that yellowtail off your ski. Well done, it has definately helped my motivation!

Keep well and goodluck!

Cd's work nicely. Yellowtail love them. My wife mustn't read this cos there is a Celine Dion cd amongst other bad or scratched cds in my dive bag for flasher purposes only!
