My boat came with a Garmin 420s and I have been loading way points by standing on my boat and keying them in, when I tried to load via SD card on my computer it says it needs .ADM format ??? Does anyone know what that is and where I can get it from, Garmin have been no help so far.

hi sea dweller,

i downloaded a program called easygps, it is free and can change waypoint files to what you need. what format are yours in now? if that doesn't work, get gps babel, also free and has some other formats in there.

don't lose hope. i remember struggling with this and all of a sudden it all came together. i will get my card out of my garmin and check the format i used, can't find the programs on my computer anymore. meanwhile, let me know what format you are converting from.

whatever you do, don't use your map card to transfer waypoints!!!!!!! it will corrupt it and garmin don't fix them so easily. use another card from a camera or something.

hope this helps

Sea Dweller,
I am no expert, but also have a 420s. It is actually quite simple. Before you can store data on the sd card you must insert the blank sd card into your unit. The unit then prepares the card for data. This step is very important - Remember - A blank card. If I remember correctly this process takes less than a minute. Once this is done the card can be used to transfer data. I use mapsourse software for this purpose and it works like a charm. Connect the card to your pc and use the "send to device" function to transfer routes/waypoints to the card. This takes a few seconds. Put the card into the 420s and transfer the data. Should be as simple as this. The tricl lies in the prepping of the blank card.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I formatted the card on the Garmin AS suggested and it put it in .ADM format but nothing seems to be able to read it. I tried easygps but it wouldn't have it with the 420s, I have found a program called GPS utility and that seems to have done the trick, although it only lets you load 100 marks and then you have to pay to upgrade. Will try GPS Babel tonight.

Thanks for the advise and help. :thankie

I think the problem is that I don't have the mapsource software or the map card (didn't come with the boat) so that may be the main problem. But this GPS utility software is not to bad and is about R400 to upgrade when I need to.

Do I need to prep the SD card also for the upgrade that one can download from Garmin website. I've downloaded the software and followed instructions to download it to an SD card, but when the card is inserted into the 420S unit, it does not read it or recognize it????

@ Sea Dweller, look for Garmin420 on EasyGps, as the s is just the sonar part.

I could do it with my "old" dicontinued Garmin182C that does not even have a usb or sd card funtionality, I use a serial port from the computer via the power cable of the GPS.

If all else fail, give Mike at Garmin or Deon at Seaport a call.

Mike's number is: 021-7889015
