How to Treat Motion Sickness

I have heard that sharks just LOOOOOVE it when you dangle your feet over the side.....................no thank you, I would rather just keep my head up and still have 2 feet left over when I get back to shore.

I don't mind dipping my feet in occasionally, but not for extended periods.

lol,
mate get a fish finder and then u only have to worry about sharks when it starts screaming at u and theres only one fish showing ..... otherwise u got more chance being hit by a car on the side walk than a shark wanting to bite your feet.

i always fish with my legs over board - find it alot more comfortable and never feel "sea sick"

I live in Johannesburg. There is a fair to reasonable chance of getting hit by a car while walking on the pavement.

The average taxi driver's motto is "If you don't like the way we drive.....stay off the pavement"

I will give your "legs over the side" a go next time I am down at the coast

A lot of it , i believe , is in the mind

My nephew had been out on the boat with me a couple of times in all kinds of conditions and had been fine. The word sea sick had never been mentioned to him.

THEN one day some idiot (old timer) on the boat tells him to come out of the cabin(it was a cold morning) or else he is going to get sea sick....about three minutes later the boy was as green as can be and hurling his guts out. And no it'ss not the cabin , as he had been in there many a time whilst out at sea

To this day he gets sick and now actually refuses to go out

There is a huge difference between being sea sick and having motion sickness.

Hang bal could not have described motion sickness any better. Its an imbalance in the inner ear making one feel light headed.

Sea sickness is feeding the fish, turning green at the gills and generally feeling as though its your last day on earth.

Fortunate for me, i fish off a fishing ski like Ian but am not affected by either motion or sea sickness.

Its nice having guys chumming the water around you though, it tends to bring the reef fish off the bottom, excellent for drop shot, LOL

Hi
Thanks for the helpful tips, I will try them all. I have been going on the sea since i was 6y. I don’t go that often and sometimes a year can laps. Every time i go out for the 1st time i get terribly sea-sick. Last time in Oct i puked more than 10 times the 1st day. My through was so cores I couldn’t even speak the next day. The second day i didn’t puke, but felt not good. The 3rd day i was fine, we went 20NM, stayed all day and i didn’t even feel the least sick. Same for all the following days at sea.

My wife is from Ukraine, she has never been on the sea before. She came to SA with me, went out to sea in 5m swells and never got sick or showed any sign of feeling bad. We have been out in any sea conditions imaginable. She just loves fishing and going out on the boat. She was upset once when i didn’t invite her with to 12mile banks at Struisbaai. Life's not fair.

to stop sea sickness you can 1 of 2 things,
1. kick that person as hard as you can in the junk and i promise they wont moan about motion sickness again.
2. tie a bucket to a line let them battle that for an hour it should also help for the vomiting feeling.

good luck please video this if you try it hehehehehe.

oooooo wait i heard that those sturgen tabs work, but i stil chunder like a thunder god every time hey

I have suffered the odd bout of motion sickness from the full on puking to the slowly losing interest and focusing on the horizon.  I have tried Sturgeron and have had no problem except severe tiredness althought this may have been two trips to Jhb the day before cramped into a Kulula "seat" breathing in recycled air.  Am going to slowly drop the dosage.  I was so tired last outing I nodded off towing and cleaning which pisses the skipper off and is even less socially acceptable than puking once in a while.

Used to get sea-sick every time as a laatie and tried everything from pills to plasters behind the ears to praying etc. I never felt sick in a moving boat or if the snoek/tail/geelbek were dik.

Then one day by chance found that if I focus on a point on the shore(for about 2 mins) the "green feeling" goes away and then I'm fine for rest of the day. Gotta do this as soon as you start feeling queasy.

Dont know what I'm gonna do if I cant see land?

I know of guys who have offered skippers their farms if they would only take them back to the harbour ...

Hi

Mythbusters did a show on motion sickness and only 1 non-pharmaceutical remedy worked for all participants - ginger tablets (taken one hour before test). Stugeron (or equivalent) worked at high dosage but had side effects such as drowsiness etc

Have not been able to test myself as I fortunately don't suffer from motion sickness. Maybe some one who does can give some feedback.

Best cure ever - A tablet called Rolab Cinnirizine 25mg, Rolab is the make and Cinnirizine is the active ingredient. So any tablet with the Cinnirizine in is the same.

Cheap and doesnt make you drowsy, avaliable at all chemists. Take 1 as you wake up, a hour or so before you go out to sea and 1 or 2 as you are getting onto the boat... MAGIC

sea sick is the sh!test feeling ever, and i got it bad, real bad. once fishing in namibia form swakop, after 10 katte i drifted in the water and felt better, back on the boat, katte, then i asked him to drop me off as close as possible to shore, was about 60-80m, and i swam, with a pap lyf, almost drowned.

What works for me is allergex, take 2 when you wake up, and works like a bomb.

And after reading all of this I came to the following conclusion ...

people that don't suffer from Motion Sickness and Sea sickness DON'T HAVE A LOT BETWEEN THE EARS

Don't forget about the Epanutin. Unfortunately you'd require a precription from your GP, but it works like a charm. Check out the thread that Reefer suggested.

Take it from a pro - this stuff jobs!!!

I agree  with taking the epanutin, it really does work much better than stugeron imo. Stugeron makes you very drowsy whereas the epanutin has no side effect  (part from your gums growing over your teeth for prolonged uninterupted use!)

I fished a comp in Malindi Kenya couple years ago and there was even a pharmacist from Nelspruit with a big bottle of the stuff which he dished out to his mates and he should know ...

Hiya Guys,

Here is my story...I am very sensitive to motion sickness, not only on a boat! I cannot drive any long distance as a passenger, never mind the back seat of a car. If I drive any distance in a lux coach I’m in trouble too.

I love boat fishing, but it can be so unpredictable and there are days when I get horribly sick, days when I chunk once, and days when I go absolutely man down!

The sea condition play no part in my condition as I have been well in conditions where salted dogs have felt queezy and on the other extreme I once got sick fishing on Lake Kariba!

I have taken quite a spectrum of motion sickness meds and there have been times I thought they worked only to chunk my lungs out using the same drugs the next time around.

I often wonder if it’s got to do with what you eat leading up to and during the trip. At best of times I don’t do well eating fatty foods. Eating early morning or late at night is not good for my tummy. Alcohol and a large late meal never works for me either.

With Neil’s boat completion around the corner I am determined to end this situation once and for all to enjoy my off-shore angling!

More advice…
