How to study the water

Is there a post anywhere here on the basics of feature finding, ie what to look for?, how long should this take?, do's and dont's and so forth, or can anyone give some feedback?

have a look at carpology on the net they have some nice articles that might help you
study the piece of water especially early morning and late afternoon to see where the fish is turning
you can give marker float a go if you want to get the depth and also just cast a weight out like a marker float weight if you just want to know what the bottom looks like {muddy/silt/gravel}
or if you have budget get the deeper fish finder
