how to become a better bass fisherman/woman.this is aimed to help all become a better fisherman

equipment

buy a very good rod.this is very important because you get feedback from your line.need to feel the line and each rock/tree what ever your lure feels.

buy the best line for the job.cheap buy will cost you your big trophy fish.line will give you the best hook set needed.

if you keep to these rules you will get more fish.

remember to focus where{depth}aggressiveness ect.if the hook is nice in his mouth that means the bass was really interested

study your water where you going to fish for structure, colour water and bait fish.pack small bag.use these lures because you feel confident they the right lure for the job.try and learn to fish a lure till you master each of his actions.present the lure softly to the water.also when walking next to dam keep in mind bass gets vibrations from your walking warning them.make sure none of your shadow is on the water if you can help it.

cast along the structure keeping your lure as long as possible in the strike zone.

happy bassing.

pls add to list where you feel you have good advice.

K USE IT OR LOSE IT

i've been reading an article that is in parts and whet this article is all ablout is where to find bass.  Not withstanding structure, drop-offs, flats etc. this article was written about a couple of guys thats been heunting these fish for years, and they've kept logs on their catches, even when they visited the US of A (the guide prioritised the location of the right place, whether it had structure or not, it had to have water of 80 degrees farenheit, this relates to rougly 24, 36 degrees celcius or there about).  Now I've been priviliged to see this in action on several pieces of water, if you find water with that temp, then match the hatch, cast and hold on to your rod. If this water happens to contain structure etc. then all the better ....

So get yourself a little thermometer on a piece of line and find that depth (thermo lines) that measures 24 degrees celcius (leave the thermometer in the depth chosen to be measured for at least 1 minute) this might cost you some time but once you've found the depth then you'll be saving time as this will result in fewer casts in relation to fish caught.

I'm experimenting with this more now since I've read the article, (thought i was onto something a year ago already, but didn't have the selfconfidence to believe what I thought.

I think it should be 26,67 deg C. Bass are most active at 76 deg F (24.44 deg C), but most comfortable at 80 deg F (26.67 deg C), or there about. I still think that any temperature is fishable as long as it doesn't go above 29 deg C.

Hi LGF
can u explain where u get 36C from? Dont understand!
SOOOOOOO Sorry, it's suppose to be 24,36 degrees celcius and not between 24 and 36 degrees.... kay and just did the conversion from 80 farenheit to celcius and that is 26,66667 celcius to be exact and like I said I noticed that Roodeplaats optimum temp for schools of small bass are around 24, so i'm seeking this 24 to 26 degrees water as a priority, if it contains structure/drops/etc then thats a bonus....

This is a very interesting subject, always remeber most bass litrature is written for American circumstances. During my 18 years in bass fishing there is two aspects of water that I paid close attention two. The color of the water and the temprature of the water. Water with a bit of color, is ussually a bit warmer than clear water! In my experience I have found water between 68 and 78 to be the most productive, over 78 I get the impression the fish start shutting down again.

The last two weekends I was fishing Middelburg Dam and Rust De Winter, water in the main dam was very clear and at 73 degrees. I found a few small fish but nothing worthwhile went into the river the water was a bit colored and at 75 degrees I hammered the fish mostly small but with the odd 1.5+

Rust De Winter I went to the river first and found some good fish in the colored water with temp at 74 degrees, went to main dam water was clear and at 73 degrees struggled to find fish until I went a bit deeper 10 - 12 foot which will have a bit of a temp drop again.

My advice is to pay attention to water only when you catch your first fish!

This is exactly the issue, getting the first one, now to find the water that holds them is where the trick lies, hence the searching and experimenting with the temp of the water as a priority obviously the matching foodsource as an equal in this equation.

I understand where you coming from, the point I am trying to make is that water temp is important but should not be used to bank on. Makes no sense to me to drive around until I find water temp in the range I am looking for especially if I know there is fish in an area, if the water temp is not ideal it ussually means you just have to do things a bit different.

Also remember the bass will adopt to circumstances and with the changing weather paterns you got to be aware of that. Typical example of this is Kwena dam near Nylstroom, I fished this place in the middle of winter July water temp 43 and found females full of eggs in the shallows. This type of behaviour throw all theories out the window! Be carefull to focus on one aspect to much.

And that is why I still say that sometimes you need to think outside the box and try something different to the rest

No probs bud, I agree with you completely, Bud saw these out the window circumstances throughout the better part of my three odd years of hunting these buggers, me focussing on the temp (experimenting with it) is just another way of trying something new, something diffirent to see if I can't get better and bigger more often, seeing as I don't stay in/near Ryan's best Bassing venue in Guateng which is MAN's Backportch PONGOLA....::S

Again it's an experiment I'm running for a while to see if the outcome isn't better than following the norms and the strange behavioural circumstances.  I'm also trying out All of the out the window lures (and believe me I've some serious kilograms of those in my collection, Remember I'm a Lure Slut, A gear Junky, and a complete fool when it comes to new stuff).
