How do you share costs or fish when fishing offshore?

We (dad and I) were wandering how do people share the costs or fish when fishing offshore? Be it reef fishing or trolling/spinning for yellow tail...

Does everyone share the fish evenly or do you keep what you catch? Do you charge people for fuel etc when inviting them along or what not?

What is the custom or norm?

On my boat depends who is going along. Good starting point is they pay for fuel and I supply the boat. What you catch is yours(legal limits and regulations in place off course as the skipper is ultimately responsible).

Tackle wise each takes his own, if you use mine you lose or break something you replace it.

You can of course discuss this among yourselves before the trip and then come to an agreement.(Normally the best way to do it as everybody is then on the same page)

When we fish the Tiger tournament(4 up)-we normally split the cost of the total trip(towing fuel, boat fuel, accommodation, food etc.). Typically my crew(part family-part friends) will then either supply all the booze or make a small donation towards wear and tear cost.

Thanks IWyk, makes sense! My dad suggested that the people pay for the fuel and I thought it might seem a bit too up-front or "voor op die wa". I know it is our boat, but if I invite someone along and then suddenly have all these conditions I worry that I might feel a bit unreasonable... Yes there is wear and tear on the boat, but if no-one goes along then I am alone and cover ALL the costs too.

I was thinking that if I take some friends with we split all the fuel and costs evenly. Usually what you catch you get to keep; but I think my dad is worried that one guy catches quota and the rest doesn't and you don't want that person to feel like it was a waste for him, hence sharing the fish.

i think if you invite friends to go with they inevitably 'assume' the costs are yours only.

end of the day, dont invite...wait till they ask!!

Most people will not have a problem to pay for fuel as they know the cost involved with owning a boat.

Catch wise, if someone catches quota or even a few fish and someone who went along did not catch a fish, by all means give the poor bugger a fish, then next time he will go along again(pay again) and he may return the favor if you blank!

If I catch one decent rock cod or red, and the others don't eish tough luck I aint cutting it up to hand out pieces, but you will be invited to the braai!(Just bring your own booze!)

I think I'm getting a raw deal, split the petrol, first fish for the skipper and then second fish for the boat plus bring snacks..but when I think about it, it's a complete score as I don't have to deal with boat ownership etc.. and it most importantly keeps me invited back because being fortunate to go out is the main thing I'm grateful for..

Also my skipper always outfishes me anyways so if I only get a fish or 2 he doesn't mind if I keep it or does like the skip above and gives his poor hungry crew one of his. So ja tell the crew to bring bait, sinkers and sabiki's for you to, they are a crew, make them work for the boat trip! ;)

It really depends on if it is once off crew or regular.

For once off, if I invite you, I do not expect you to contribute anything. I will send you a list of what is recommended to wear and what to bring to eat / drink if you don't know. Everything else is provided - even the seasick tablets. If you choose to offer a contribution, then that is always welcome - but when you see me put in 100 litres, please keep the 50 bucks in your pocket....

If you want to hire me to take you out, then I will respectfully decline and suggest you go with a professional charter. There are many legal issues and pitfalls here, and having done it for a few years, I have no wish to compete with the genuine, hard working charter skippers.

When it comes to regular crew, we just take turns with the fuel. Over the years it evens out between inshore / offshore trips.
The fish generally goes with the angler or we take a loin each on a bigger fish and when we have enough we release.

I know it sounds harsh but on a small boat, it is best for you to advise the guest on what to bring. It can be challenging to store tuna rods, tail rods, tackle bags, lunch bags etc for 4 people on a 5m boat.

I always only fill up morning before launching, for safety reasons
"Crew" can see the cost in other words
They must then not come at the slip afterwards with "now what do I owe you", because I will decline and make a mental note to myself.
But if he takes out R500.00 without asking, I will accept and tell him that I am greatful.
What I REALLY appreciate is an offer to help wash trailer and boat, but sadly this seldom happens
The only fish I keep is what I can eat myself and give to a handful of neighbours

What I do for trips (invite only lol) is I put out an itinerary detailing all the cost, travel, fuel, bait, camping etc. and give the summery to everyone joining me. We split the cost evenly between everyone / every family and I buy all the groceries and ensure the boat is fueled according to the plan. The gear is all mine cause I know what I have and how I treat my gear, and everyone on the bout knows "my klappe brand" if they mistreat my gear.
Because only close friends and family join there is usually no issue about the sharing. First catches will go on the braai for all to enjoy, surplus is everyone his own.

Depends what they can afford. After all, I wont leave a friend behind because he's battling financially. I never ask and take donations when offered. I'm very lucky to have good friends.

Tackle wise, bring your own except trolling tackle. Then I supply because I like to keep it professional. Don't want a guy rocking up with Penn 49 when everything else is Tiagra on the boat. Also what if he brings Daiwa.. eish. Not worth the risk.

On my boat we share fuel costs equal ways.I also have a very small selection of friends that come out with me.Some people don't get asked back...

If I go out with a friend/collegue,I make sure I ask exactly what he wants in the way of fuel/costs and I also make sure I help wash the boat and usually buy drinks and snacks for the trip.

The biggest irritation for me is that the person doesn't have cash on them and they say that they will pay later, that seldom happens.

If you want to get invited back, make sure you put the extra work and pay up.

When I take frends with we split the towing fuel and boat fuel between the number of people on the boat ususly 4 ways.

When we fish comps usualy Loskop this year the Tiger ( we are myself plus 3 mates) we split all costs 4 ways everything added up and we also split any prise we win 4 ways. This prevents some one from moaning about having the "bad" side to fish from.:? and it works well

Seeing you in Cape Town this is the excepted norm in Cape Town.....
crew split costs of fuel/oil etc if there are 3 of you on boat all costs split 3 ways , bring their own lunch and cold drinks - no booze , foul weather gear, max 2 rods if its spinning for tail ,meet on time else they left behind end of day help clean the boat , run motors , pack everything away .

Find a couple of mates that are reliable, pay their way and stick with them, a six pack of cold beer is generally the best way to get  people to hang around after a trip and help clean the boat.

I've got a handfull of friends who regularly crew for me. We also only fuel up before launching and share the fuel costs 50/50. They keep all their fish and help clean the boat afterwards. I'm also fortunate in that they always offer to tow the boat to the launch site at their own expense and buy the skipper ;) a few beers afterwards.
