Hi

No funny or fancy stories.  No family or friends fished except and old cogger of a neighbour who had terrible table manners, bad temperament and non people's person and a real nors oke.  Bottom line is, I asked him as a youngster to go with him and here I am.  I got into fishing because I really, really, really wanted to.  ciao

Got infected with the fishing bug by an uncle when still in primary school. Only did fishing when he allowed me to join him. Gave me my first rod - a split cane nogal with a centre pin reel. I subsequently broke this rod into 15cm pieces in a fit of rage because my ma refused to allow me to go fishing. Cut my hand in the process and still regret my moment of madness - not because of the cut but because of the rod. Didn`t fish much while in school but have made up for that over the last 40 years.

My dad used to drag me along (kicking and screaming, yeah right) when i was old enough to hold a rod.

Damn, I wish the old man was still about to go fishing with. I have no regrets though, we never turned each other down for a trip while he was still about.

mine was actually the other way around. i got my dad started on fishing.

some family member bought me one of these 2piece toy el cheapo fishing sets and after getting my hook stuck on the bottom of the dam on the 1st cast, i then tried to free it by yanking the rod but only managed to shake the top piece of the rod loose which slid down the line to the bottom of the dam.

then my brother bought me a super fancy rod and penn reel so i was amped to give it another bash, this time in durban harbour. that was me hooked. dad then bought a bay boat just for him to cruise around the bay but after seeing me having a blast catching off the boat, i pursuaded him to have a go and that was that,he was in. we used to sometimes do 13hr stints on the boat just straight fishing!

Well, no one in my family was interested in angling.  The family's Boxing Day and New Year's day picnic was at Black Rock in the Reserve.  A handlyntjie and crushed periwinkle for bait was it for me.  A helpful neighbour showed me a few tricks.

I went to school with a girl whose dad was a WP angler in the old era.  They invited me for a trip to Arniston and after that it was no turning back, 17 years on and I'm still slogging on.

Turning my attention to the competitive side of things now.

I guess i just always wanted to but the okes i knew always went suiping instead of fishing so yep for me it was no fun. Then last year a bud told me how he took his son fishing, i then asked him to take me along and hell and that was the begining of what now i cant live without. I guess when BRENDON took me out the 1st time was really the nail in the coffin. I landed myself a small(note very small) SKAAMIE, hell was i proud! The next week i struck it lucky with 2 KOB i now i skeem i am a angler...:D even doing 18hour stints, no luck with the fish but hell what a enjoyable time at the water....

Wel let me see,

It started when I was 4 yrs old and my dad and myself used to go line fishing on the kreef boat in Kommetjie,I grew up there my granddad being the lighthouse keeper and all,and when he moved to Mosselbay I used to go there every single hoilidays possible, when my dad came down for Xmas and all,we used to go down to the haourber and fish, then somtimes to Dannabaai, thats where I learnt how to fish and cast with a penn reel, many bird nests later I got it right and today I thank my dad and granddad for teaching me the fishing ways.... now I am teaching the same to my kids as I feel that my granddad is watching from his fishing spot up above and saying ...yes thats my boy.....

P.s YES LAND I KNOW I HAVE POSTED THIS PIC BEFORE LOL LOL LOL

Hi banumzane, great topic.

I went to Durbs with my government and strolled the notorious pier in the evening in 2000. I was so 'hooked' by the locals pulling shad after shad. There after there was a sudden grunter run and those guys were enjoying themselves. To be honest, the guys were disciplined and no insults nor swearing like it's happening nowadays. There after I bought myself a 7' carp rod and a yellow 14' fibreglass rod. I started catching carp and barble in a private dam. My first catch at sea was a juvenile dusky in Umhlanga, caught with the cheapest 9kg line, no leader and a small hook. Since then, I never looked back.

I have fished since I can remember. My whole family loves fishing so I got introduced to the sport from birth. Only thing is I don't love it I am an addict my wife said the other day that I woke up in the middle of night sat up and said "Hier kan n man mos visvang" and just fell asleep again. In any case I fish as often as possible and I do just about every possible facet of the sport.

Dude

Its an addiction! And believe me, I know alot about that particular field-its my profession!

An addict who is denied his substance of choice becomes restless, irritable and discontent.

Need I say more?!?!

Without going into the finer details of the various diagnostic criteria we use,I can safely say that most of us here are well and truely addicted.

Anglers Anonymous here we come!

How did I get into angling?

For as long as I can remember I've always been fascinated by the sea.I had a number of uncles (and aunts!) who fished and hunted and I was always in awe of them and their tales of giant beasts and huge fish that they encountered in the first half of the 20th century.

I only got serious about fishing when I finished school 22 years ago and then more on the commercial side. For a young guy with bad habits it was the ideal environment.Quick money and lots of it-although definitely not easy.Slaughter not sport.

I've left that world behind and have rediscovered the simple joy I once used to feel all those years ago.
