Hooked : Monster Fishing - Fresh water Stingray

Hi Guys ,

 

did any of you catch this Documentary in Thailand ..

 

Damn those ffish are huge ...

Did u guys see that fish market , damn they were selling hammers , Sandies , Duck bills etc ..they eat anything there ....

 

But what amazed me is that it is Nat Geo wild programme & when they caught that huge Sting ray , they put a rope through the spiracles & tied it off & then took it to shore ... rope was used to controls the animals better ..

 

How was the tackle ... Damn major deep sea stuff ...

I  am sure that holding / handling or even tieing ropes through the spiracles can Harm the Animal ..

 

Am i correct or have i been taught wrong ???

They have a series on them, Called Megafish
Also watched the one where they go for Piriquai (Spelling) in the amazon !

Megafish was brilliaint there was also a show on discovery last week but it never showed again this week .I also thought the rope through the spiracles was dangerouse for the fish although it did not seem to phased buy the rope .those fish are amazing would love to slide a bait out for one of those Do you guys think we d have a chance with our heavy tackle and a stingray like that.

You guys obviously missed the one on the huge Siberian trout. It's called a Taimen.

They grow to 600Lbs. I think but I may be mistaken.

yeah is a good show. also wondered about using the rope through the spiracles hey. can't even imagine how much it must kill your back to pull one of those monster rays up to the surface from the floor! hectic stuff!

Damn & those sting rays all caught on throw baits ...
what an experience that wud be .... to get hooked into 1 of those monsters !!!

My 2 friends who are going fishing with us at Mazeppa this week have fished for Taimen in Mongolia and reckon there's nothing that can match them in flowing water.

Some more infor on the Taimen. Most reliable catch record was 231lbs still a huge salmanoid.

Living alongside the freshwater ray is the largest ever recorded freshwater fish.  The Mekong catfish with a caught fish weighing in at 293kg over 600lbs

These fish are herbivores and are caught mainly with bread or pap baits.

Imagine casting for a Carp and hooking this thing:

That's why I asked the question about handling a ray by it's spiracles at a stage.

They put the rope through the one spiracle then take hold oh the rope inside the fishes mouth and then push it up through the other spiracle.

Apparantly it doesnt touch the gills of the fish and equates to the ropes put through the big catfishes gill plates.  The rope doesn't actually touch the gills of the fish.

Many anglers pick up big kob or cracker by the gill plates and avoid contact with the gills, you don't want your hand in the mouth or to use a gaff. 

Just what other way is there to hold onto such a big ray without hauling it out of the water. 

Apparently these rays once photographed and documentd (dna samples etc taken) are released and they swim away freely and strongly and many have been re-captured.
