Hi All

Was 2 hole in the wall last week. Had 3 serious hookups. The first 1 stripped about 150m line and then my tapered leader broke @ the knot - had this leader fitted @ Tackel centre. Slided out another shad and after a few hours had a pickup- stripped about 300m into my braid - then the unexplainable happens - the fish - a blacktip jumps out of the water about 2 times and my braid breaks - damm.

So i  spooled about 200m double x on and slided another shad out and it is pickedup after 2min. About 100 m into my braid the same thing happens again - the braid breaks - is there any reason 4 this to happen?

What is the braid breaking strain? What knot did you use to join the braid to the mainline?

Hi

Braid breaking strain = 25kgs Braid used was Kingfisher

Use the cats paw knot to join the braid to the mono topshot . Ps the braid did not break on the cats paw - just broke somewhere berore it.

Was the braid old maybe.? Im sure braid loses strength once it ages and has been wet a few times and then stored for a while on the reel. Can anyone back me up here?

Yes it does get old, which weakens it.
I hear the ESA Team had the same issue a few years back (with Kingfisher braid breaking) so they started using Whiplash Pro instead which fixed the issue.

Ray, can you comment on this?

I agree that the braid does rot - but over a period of time.

After I wash my reels (with fresh water) - I always leave out for the day so that the reel is properly dry before storing in its bag.

Off the point a little...you must wash the reel bag now and then as well - it get salt water on it...salt draws moisture so everytime it rains or is humid the reel will be in a damp bag...this not good for the braid, line, bearings and for corossion.

Got to agree with braid ageing and weakening over time.Another reason maybe as to why the braid kept breaking of was that it wasnt wouned on tight enough,therefore bit into itself whilst you where fighting the fish,an broke off .

Ok, What is the lifespan of braid ??? I only get to the sea about 4-5 times a year, and at the longest, fish for 5 days ???

Hmm also dont know,but as Misguide said,after fishing it would be advisable to wash the reel with fresh water and dry it off.I would think your braid is still good Homie,just flip the braid over every six months or so.What you guys think of the kingfisher braid?Mines has lost colour,gone from green to greenish white,wonder if i should change it?i used the reel almost every weekend,and the braids about 3years old.Given that i only reached it a few times?

Well mine also changed color just as yours did. I also wash my reels after every fishing experience so i just aint sure what went wrong.

Most if not all braids will fade in colour. The spectra fibres are extreemly difficult to dye any colour and as a result, the colour doesnt last on them very well.
I use he kingfisher 80lb on my bottom fishing reels and no problems. its about 3yrs old and gets abused with pressures higher than you can put on with a surf reel. its faded yes, but the fish dont mind. also doesnt get pamperd with warm bubble baths, just a dunk in a bucket of fresh water at the end of a holiday. it also doesnt have nylon covering it from the sun etc. sure you do get some bad batches though. got spider wire that is kak and then another spool that is 100%

Quite a few people I know have had problems with Kingfisher braid breaking WAY below the stated breaking strain in fact some shops have had so many complaints they wont stock it anymore. Then again some folks have had zero problems with it. Perhaps this is similar to the new Kingfisher safari chillers some are good and some are sh1t. It seems Kingfishers products lack consistency

Well my boet did manage to hook into a bronzie of abt 2m+ - stripped the shit out of us two. We fought it for about 1.5 hrs - brought it to almost ten meters from us - then a fool fishing in the fishes path refused to remove his line from the water and as my boet lowered his line to cross underneath , the bronzie took straight into the reef .Also it was quite difficult  land the bugger cos or the rocky area @ Mhblompo point.

We did manage to get a rockod of abt 2kgs, a kingie of abt the same weight and some nice size shad. My boet also got a kob of about 3kgs.

Fishing Down here , right Now , is absolutely crappy to say the least ...
I'm considering taking up chess instead !
Winter season I can understand , just nice to see people still hooking into other things along the coast .
I can't wait for the sealine Bash . Eish .

Hi Def

In all we had about 8 pickups with only 1 bronzie being almost landed - anyway it was a good thing he got away as we did not want to gaff him. From the 8 - i had 4 and 1 was a black tip which stripped abt 500m line - did some spectacular leaps out of the water and then my braid broke.

Also the locals are getting some nice kob late in the night @ Mbhlombo point.
