Hi Guys,

We are 6 guys going down to Hole-in-the-wall in June, and would like to know if some of you have fished this area at this time of year and what we can expect etc.?

We have arranged for around 50kg of decent baits, but worried about finding nice live mullet etc. Can anyone advise on where to find these? Are there any tackle shops in the area?

Any advise would be of great help, and I would be sure to write a report on how our trip went.

If anyone is going to that area give me shout and perhaps we can get some nice tights whilst there!

You should get a lot of shad/elf at most of the spots. These make excellent bait either as fillets, or whole dead and alive. Areas like Mhlongwane you should get sharks if you are into that type of fishing. If you are the early rising variety a trip down to Mpholompho you may pick up Garrick/yellowtail before the countless numbers of local shad fishermen arrive. TRy plugs for them. Mullet you will find in the estuary south of Mpholompho, a bit of a character building trip in a 4WD though.

You may also pick up White cracker in the rocks to the left of Mhlongwane but that is good sinker depositing country. Again shad is good bait

There are also a number of kob around at Umtata mouth. In the rocky areas Galjoen could be caught again in the early mornings and at dusk near the Gullies and Dutoits. And of course there will be shad around 

Shad,Shad shad are everywhere and we have found them to be the best bait and taking sards and chokka back home. We have learnt to take 3/4 boxes of sard only.

Tackle shops are as scarce as Red Steenbras in that area.

 Another thing is to get yourself a ghillie/s as they also know the area and also get that shad koors when they are about, some of the more popular areas resemble porcupines and there are lots of large rusty hooks flying around. Ghilies have that amazing ability to dodge those. we watch then fish when the exitement dies down a little

Thanks for the great advice Magicactus. I'll be down there in less than a week. Is there anywhere I can pump prawn or worm around Hole in the Wall?

You may get prawn in the estuary near mdumbi which is about a 20 miunte drive away. Otherwise pump pink prawn from your tackle shop. We have found that the fish around that area have a voracious appetite for fresh flesh especially around June/July.

Thanks guys!!! Thats what I love about these online forums! Guys willing to share their knowledge of the area!

We are mainly targeting the inedibles, and I've heard that mbolompo point (mind the spelling) is apparently the place to be on this part of the coast

Mhpholompho was where there that angry blackifin dragged me around for three hours. When the easterly picks up the fish tend to come on the bite, especially the sharks. You may want to try Cracker Point/Aloes for the shark variety, this is around the bay to the left of Mhlongwane, a bit of a hike but worth it. Whole blacktail also work well.

At Mphlompho, If a swell is running be careful off the front or the flat rock with the ladder across. The waves can get deceptivley large very quickly, have seen one or two guys get washed off there luckily into a large pool, he had more of a bruised ego and a wet cellphone and several giggling locals.

Has anyone fished this area at this time of year? How doed the sardine run affect these areas? How do I locate a tide chart of the area?

Use the durban tide chart, 7-8am high is good or lowtide springs. Small pilot shoals of sardines have apparently been spotted off plett. Sards=chaos if they do come in. We are hoping to catch up with them between 30may to 6 june in the area.

Do you think we are going :fishna bit late for the run? I am scared it has the vacuum effect if it has already passed....

I've had trouble finding a decent map of the Transkei... I have been trying to check which areas I can look up for the barometric pressures (Dstv Weather channel:SSS), but dont know of major places around the area...

Can someone help?
