Hi there.

Currently fishing for barbel on my Carp Cannon rod with a Carp Caliber BR60. I am looking for a rod I can use just for some big barbel so my carp rod can go back to pulling out carp. I have no idea what kind of rod to use for these big boys.

Please help.
Thanks in advance.

If money isn't an issue look at the Black Cat rods, R2500 upwards but if you're on a budget you can never go wrong with a Shakespeare Ugly Stik.

Hi Chris

Multitude of options

Personal pref the Shakepeare Ugly Stik 9ft XH, do a quick search and you will see that many others agree. I was at All Out Angling in Centurion a month ago and they had stock.

Cheers Anthony

Wat katrolle betref dink ek dit hang als af van persoonlike keuse en wat jy kan of wil spandeer. Baie ouens het my aangeraai om 'n Shimano TLD te kry maar ek is useless met 'n multiplier.

Sensations new Whiska catfish rod are very nice and similar to the Ugly sticks. Available in 8 and 9 foot. I have used both lengths and am very happy with them.

Very well priced as well.

I use a small boat to drop my baits as I believe in big baits for barbel so do not cast with them.

Mine are paired with Alvey 6500 reels and this works for me with the way I like to set up my rods on the bank. I use the Alvey that only has a spool tensioner and no drag with the handles mounted directly on the spool. This way I can lock down, without having the drag slip if I need to stop a big cat from getting into structure or if I am fighting the cat from the boat I can put maximum pressure to lift him of the bottom.

These rods can also be used with big coffee grinders if preferred.

I don't like using multipliers for big cats as it is much more comfortable having the reel on the bottom of the rod.

They have a reasonably soft tip which is great while the cat is mouthing and swallowing the bait and then bends away which effectively shortens the rod when the fight starts allowing you to put some serious pressure on when needed.

They are very tough rods.

They work for me and the way I fish for cats, but I suppose as with all things each person has his own preference.

So depending on how you fish and what your requirements are you want to also have a look at these rods.

Tight lines.

Tyd vir my groot snor stok. Thanks guys. Any reel suggestions?

Ive got a 5000 Stradic with 30lb braid as an all rounder, buy the best 4000/5000 class Shimano spinning reel in your budget and load it with 20/30 lb braid.

My "heavy" reels are used when there is lots of structure and to target the 20kg plus fish. Both are multipliers,

- TLD 15/30 50lb braid
- Penn 500, 30lb mono

I don't use baitrunners so can't comment on them

I'm also looking for a new catfish lure casting rod after breaking the tip of my trusty Fenwick Eagle GT Tiger Edition over the weekend.

Dies anyone know if one gets an Ugly Stik in 7 foot MH or H and do they work for casting lures as opposed to bait fishing?

Cheers

Yes, Ive got a 7ft but its a medium with a 2500 stradic that I use for casting lures at cats, yellows, tigers and light tackle at the coast. Works like a bomb and is bulletproof, my dad got these tigers on it
