Hi

Please can somebody assist me?
If I purchase a hand held VHF with DCS is this legal for deep sea fishing or does the radio have to be fixed mount?
Where can I purchase this and how much. (P.E)

it was only allowed on jetski etc.
I believe that you now need to have aa fixed radio fitted and in working condition.

for cof of c and higher.
on a cat d cof they did allow hand helds.

why not get both, use the handheld in your capsize container as emergency.

and it is DSC, Digital Selective Calling.

Can I still use a hand held.
Roughly what do the VHF hand held with DSC go for?

As long as the hand held is 5W you don't need a licence and operators cert etc . Seaport do one for 1500.00 I see phone for stock though normal 1900.00

yes I asked 20 people last week and got 24 different answers.

I know this much for sure:(Harbour launch)
I need a vhf
I need a vhf with DSC

This part I am unsure?
Can it be hand held for 1 nautical sea mile?

I would hate to pay R6500 for a vhf with dsc hand held
and then be told I need a fixed mount

Today I called SAMSA

The call went like this:
Me: "Good day please could you give me clarity on requirements for VHF radio for 1 nautical sea mile, harbour launch."

SAMSA: "Everybody is in training please call again later"

Answer from SAMSA:
2016 VHF
2017 VHF with DSC
2017 If boat has a console you require a fixed mount.
If boat has no console you can use a hand held.

Thank you I just saved myself R6500 by nearly buying a hand held and then having to buy a fixed mount next year.

Yes what a minefield. 2017 VHF with DSC but as far as i know please correct me if im wrong. At the moment there is no available opperators course curriculum for this.(not talking normal Vhf) even the trainers is now in training. So at the moment no one in SA is qualified to give the test and there is no training Manual available either. still being compilled.

You must have a opperators licence for vhf 5W or 25w your radio also needs to be registered and licensed. I read the other day about a guy that bought a set of handhelds and did the right thing to try and get them registered and licenced. he had alot of problems. so if you buy be sure to buy from a reputable source there is some documentation that the seller needs to fill out as well.

All this is hearsay and if There is someone out there in the know please helllllp!!!!

I spoke to hilton jones and a fixed VHF is required. However in terms of the VHF license, us guys that have VHF licenses already will have to go have it upgraded to include DSC. When i asked Hilton Jones who in KZN offers this course, he said that SAMSA is still to approve service providers.
So even though SAMSA have mentioned we all have to have DSC VHF radios and licenses by 2017, because they have not provided these service providers to allow us to upgrade our licenses, he said it will probably be pushed back to 2018

This is stupid.
I am registering as a new member and cant get a C.O.F.
unless I have a VHF with DSC.
But can only do the exam in 2018???
Why don't SAMSA just put the exam and learning online like other countries already do???????

SAMSA still provides the course, but like our VHF licenses. You will be legal, you will only have to go do the DSC upgrade when it becomes available
