Hi,

My name is Ecki and I will be moving to the mother city next summer. I want to bring my boat with me and have a couple of questions. My boat is a beautiful 38 foot lobster boat with dual engines and 520 hp. We want to use the boat to watch some whales, drive out and anchor at a nice bay for swimming and sun bathing etc.

Can you give me some tips which marinas would be best for me? What kind of skippers license do I need?

Thank you in advance!

Best regards,
Ecki

Hi Ecki, In cape town the best bay and time for whale watching would be in Hermanus from 30 September to 2 October. This is the Annual whale festival in Cape Town. They come so close to shore that you don't even need the boat.. but it helps. Regarding Skippers Licence, it depends how far you want to go off-shore, herewith a link to the site explaining all. http://skippercourses.co.za/

Water in Hermanus is cold!!!
Have fun!

Simonstown, Gordons Bay (Harbour Island or Old Harbour) or Waterfront. The first three are all in False Bay, the latter in Cape Town city.
Warmer water in False Bay makes swimming better. But, more great whites. Atlantic side from Waterfront offers great beaches, few sharks but the water is cold.
Whales are everywhere in winter.
You will need a category A.

Hi Fin-s, do you go out regularly in Gordons Bay area?
Or do you fish from the reefs?

Thank you for the info. Swimming with great whites around me is not my cup of tee. I rather stay on the boat :D

Is there a guide to the marinas and bays around Cape Town available? I find cruising guides for nearly every part of our planet - except for South Africa:?

Best,
Ecki
