Hi

I'm of to Mazeppa the first week in October. It will be for the first time, so don't know it at all. Although I've read lots about it, there is nothing better than a local. So I need one to show me around for for a day or two. I've read a couple of posts where people recommend them by name, but for the life of me I can't find them.

Any names would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Zola is one of the Senior guys Zola Zwelindoa 0748465184

Andrew, Michel and John are good and Zola's younger brother Akon is an up and coming Ghillie

These guys are gillies and know how to fish, read the water, gaff, collect bait and will out fish 90%of the guys they work for, myself included.

The 4 I mentioned above are accredited at the hotel they are not just pack donkey's to carry kit they are full blood fishermen

If you can't get hold of one (their cell phones are forever going for a swim) then phone Lionel at the hotel, he has recruited and vetted the top gillies......047 498 0033

They charge per day.

I take old clothes and fishing tackle with that softens the deal.

their going rate is R100 a day and R150 through the hotels but it's worth every cent, they put you on the fish every time and when fishing for shark I supply a rod and bait and they catch supper, the deal is I take 1 or 2 fish for the pot and he keeps a few.

Zola when your gillie will supply live Octopus and wonder worm for free and a 2kg Occie and a 3kg kob is well worth r150 plus he'll put you on the grunter if you want or Steenies if you want and of late he's figured out the Cracker but he remains the top Kob fisherman among the Gillies.

If you work well with them and they see you're not irresponsible they will fish 24/7 with you but if they think you're reckless they'll leave sunset.

The guys who are just porters, I pay R50 tops and use them as Gophers, it's dangerous to them and your equipment to use them as fishing guides.

Talk to Zola and he will tell you who to approach if the regulars are not available

Was in Mazeppa in for 2 weeks in April, and used Zola every day. He's the best I've worked with. Enthusiastic, active, not scared to walk 5 km each way everyday if necessary. Not scared of 4am start or 7pm finish. Knows all the spots, and is also worth a conversation. Ties good knots, his bait presentations are good, and he never says no. If there's a negative, and it's minor, he's a little messy - leaves fish heads lying around, and the rocks and the safari chiller can sometimes look a little like a slaughter house. We landed 16 specis, no sharks unfortunately, so I did not see him perform that duty.

We gave Zola a spool of line, a safari chiller, a pair of polarised specs, gum boots and the water socks as a bonus. The guys live a different life to us, and these thing are like gold to them.

I did also fish boiling Pot and the island whilst Andrew was helping shark fisherman. He did everything, including casting (pendulum cast about 130 - 150m at a guess), the guys fought the fish and Andrew controlled the dangerous end. I saw him land a 100kg+ rag in the gully next to boiling pot by locking his arms around it's head and hoisting it out onto the bricks - he had help with the tail but I was very impressed. And a 100kg+ blacktip that he guided the fisherman through the bricks and landed it at the gully next to cable rock. He has a great sense of humour, and would talk rings around even some of the good fisherman. For eds I believe he's just as good.

Jip, them gillies know what they doing, you should see them catch occys ,call one of them and tell them you'll give R100 for 3 nice big occys and 30 minutes later they got 3 of the best. As a student I don't have the cash to hire a gillie for the whole trip but the next time I go there I'm gonna hire either Zola or Andrew when the weather is good to kite fish for 2 or 3 days. Gonna need their help and experience when I hook into a buss.

Those2 as well as Michael are not Gillies they are Pukka fishing guides.

DB quota on Occies is 2 per day, why encourage the guys to break the law (unless the occies were for 2 anglers?)

Hi Guys, just came back from Mazeppa and got two Raggies with Zola as Gillie, he is the best by far,he really works like a Trojan.
He swam with his last cell number so here is his new one: 083 5726 112.

Enigma, just an update, Lionel is no longer at the hotel Vanessa and Gerald are running it on their own and doing a really good job, just love the place.
