Hi Guys, what would you suggest I use to clear coat a popper with?

This was my first attempt at making something like this myself, I know it is not necessarily a fish catching pattern, but this was more about experimenting with the process, with the tools I have on hand, the paint already on the popper is an enamel applied with a brush, the flash and eye is just reflective tape from the tackle shop. I would now like to put on a nice glossy clear coat to finish it off. Please note I do not have access to any form of spraying equipment or rotating drying rack, although I can build a simple drying rack fairly easily.

Not Bad, not bad at all. Perhaps dipping would be the answer if you don't have access to spraying equipment, thin it out to a fair ammount and dip it several times allowing it to dry out rougly 70% (gauge between wet and completely dry paint) this way you'll end up with a smooth even spread of clear coat.

You could always still build the drying rack thaa'll keep the dipped paint from forming teardrops etc

Thanks Little Green Fish, as far as clear coat goes what products would you suggest, are there any "spray can" clear coats which will stand up to the job?

I am not so keen on dipping this one as I have built it with the hooks already attached and a recessed power swivel in the head.

I think it looks very good and don't think it is not a fish attracting colour. It is one of my favourites.

I agree dipping it would have been the best way but then you would need to put through wires. The clear laquer in the spray can is not as good, but it will work and who cares if the fish chews some of it off?

Nice work!

Thanks Benniejordaan, I will complete my painting before adding wires and ballast next time. For this one I'm going to have to go for the spray can.

What product would you suggest using for the clear dip in future?

A PU clear should do the trick. They use that stuff for outdoor furniture and floors... Tough as nails!

GOJ, yeah, only saw the hooks fixed after I had answered, Bennie's advice is spot on for this lure, but best do the dipping before the hooks and stuff next time.

So I got some clear spray, some clear coat to dip and finished off the popper, also shaped a couple of stick baits and finished them off with the dip. Must say the dipping gets a far nicer finish.
