Hi guys this may sound like a dumb question but I have not fished rivers being a dam angler myself, but i need help on what sort of rigs to use, I'm used to using the "gly Rietvlei strop" in a dam with a M1 weight and no1 daichii hooks, do I use the same stuff or what because it seems a little light for me in river current flow and all, and if u use mielie bomb doesnt it wash off? and degies too? I dunno, really could do with all the advise u guys give, rigs for carp, yellowfish, baber , muddies i need info all u can provide will be appreciated.

Hi Craig, Welcome to Sealine.

I would say go with a Vaal Dam Rig also known as a "Gooi Strop" ,try Bigger sinkers, like P4 etc.

Baits: I would go with mielies, more solid and stays on the hooks longer, SWD Muddies love them in the River, the Muddy gets to the bait even before the dough is washed-off.

Kind Regards

If the river you're fishing in is fast flowing, & has alot of snags that keep breaking you off, try fishing with just one hook, I usually go with a Rietvlei trace & leave the bottom hook on. Some parts of some rivers are not too fast flowing, for instance the Vaal River at Aqua Via (around Villiers) - where I fish as I would in the dam as far as traces & bom are concerned. Vaaldam trace is a good option too I agree, with a little heavier than usual weight, in case the stream is dragging your lines. For fast flowing rivers, I would avoid the middle where the flow is usually a bit stronger. Fast flowing rivers can be really frustrating, but if it's producing, I dont see why not. A more gentle flow, to almost no flow is (arguably) easier to fish, you can even bait up the area with feeding balls & so on. Tight lines :)
