As you guy's can see I posted on the 29th November for some assistance in the Stilbaai area, got no replies! I realised I am either in for unexplored water or people think I am stupid wanting to drop shot in this area. I arrived on the 13th December in some bad weather, rain wind and everything else the Cape have to offer. On the Tuesday morning the weather calmed a bit but was still cloudy and cold. After a conversation with the guy I rented the holiday house from telling me that the sea water has been very cold for a while now and it would probably be better to fish a bit further up in the river where the water might be a bit warmer.

I decided to fish close to the bridge over the Goukou river as you enter Stilbaai. My tackle of choice was a 5" Mc Carthy Gold Fish jerk bait on a 1/4 ounce jig head. Being a bass fisherman I found it difficult to adjust to the faster action and was fishing the jig head fairly slowly. The area I was fishing was very rocky and got stuck a few times, after about 20 minutes I had some luck with a decent cob. Not sure about the weight as I did not have a scale with me.

Fished for another 10 minutes and got another one of same size. decided to leave the place and save some for the next day. Next morning when I arrived there the place was packed with people throwing everything in the book, nobody had any luck though! I re located closer to the mouth with sand banks and caught lots of smaller cob. Then decided to fish faster with the same jerk bait and got a few small leeries. I then targeted grunters but had no luck, although the guy's around me were catching them on blood worm. Herewith a few pics!

The fight!

The boy in the picture is my grandson now 6 years old and my fishing partner from the age of 2 years. He has caught plenty fresh water fish already and is a capable bass fisherman he had an absolute ball with the small cob the next day!

This is the best I have ever done with drop shot but then again have not been doing it for very long, must admit I really enjoyed it will definetly continue! I have to catch a grunter of decent size at least!

Hi Sunshine

The second one I got was slightly bigger, must admit has been a while where I had the feeling that I am not in charge when fighting the fish and with both I felt like that at least for the first minute! They both gave very good count of themselves and all fish was released unharmed much to the dismay of some holiday makers and some locals! Here is a pic of the second one.

Very well done on the cob, we normally go there to spin for Leeries and never tried to drop shot for cob..I'll give it a try during the 1st week in Feb..::S

Thanks Neptune, it was an awesome experince and I am hooked! I think my bass fishing experience helped a bit at least knew how to work a lure slowly and how to speed up if need be!

Optic - I caught some leeries on the minnow as well, don't know if my theory is correct but what I found was if I speed up with the minnow (Jerk action) I caught leeries, if I bounce it on the bottom I caught cob! I could not get one leerie on popper or spoon so I stuck to the minnow!

Hennie - I think your bassing techniques and knowledge helped more than you know, especially on the kobbies... I'm a long way from a Kob expert, but all the real fundi's I know say that speed of retrieval is key... SLOOOOOOOOW... most of us saltwater okies probably fish way to fast for Kob...

Good job!
