Hey man I'd get the saltist 50 just for line capacity nothing wrong with the reel I've got 550m 50 pound spiderwire under my 200m .55seagrand ample if I can't stop or turn a boy with that not much else will ,they cast great better than some other reels just change ur drag washers to carbontex they brill .the saltiga 40 is a bit short on line .

Bud the Saltiga and Saltist are in 2 different classes! The Saltiga is an awesome machine of a reel but in my mind a bit too pricey, zero value for money....well value for the first R3000 but any extra bucks is a waste! The Saltist is very plasticky for lack of a real word! The Shimano Torium is always the better reel in this class!

Strange how that is! Here in Cape Town it is the Torium that is by far the more popular of the two reels and in Namibia I believe it is the other way round!

Strange too how one never hears about too many failures on Saltists but Saltigas are forever getting lip for popping spools and stripping threads!

I have a saltist 40 and I have 300m of 30lb braid and 350of .45 mono on. I use it for my castbait real. Dont know if there is a diffrense in line capassety between the saltist 40 and saltiga 40?

I hope you are going to enjoy it man. I got a beautiful sandy on my saltist this weekend. Gave him horns and the saltist handled it well. Saw my braid briefly.

i have both saltist 40 saltiga 50

saltist i use for non eds works perfectly also used it to grind in some snoek. i have coaught hundreds of cob, geelbek, white stump etc

saltiga i use for the occasional non ed hunt, ie only when the eds are scarce.

you will enjoy both.

ps i also have a torium and it is just as good as the saltist!

The saltist 50 in Balck looks pretty sweet. Could not justify the cost of the saltiga. rather buy a second saltist as a spare/second outfit. I have a saltist 50 and 30. 50 for non eds and 30 for eds. Spooled the 30 with 80 pound braid after some good advise on this site and absolutely love it.

Just got my saltist 50. Need to load it up with my braid. Purchased 300mts 48lbs bully braid and 37lbs mono kfga. Jus 1#uestion. Should I put the brais on manually or by machine?

Well, seems like you made up your mind already! Enjoy your Saltist, nothing much wrong with the reel at all, other than the casing construction. Whereas the Saltiga has the tougher alu casing than the Saltist.

Saltiga less prone to wear ~ noticed a good few shabby looking Saltists!

I like to do this with my reels straight after Ive bought them, and it helps a stack load in terms of corrosion resistance

Open the reel up and paint a layer of grease on everything inside (use drag grease for the drag washers) using an old toothbrush. The saltwater will run off and out the reel, leaving the insides free of standing water. If you do this, you dont have to service your reel as often as you would if you didnt. And ya the normal spray with frshwater after use blah blah blah

Different strokes for different folks, but thats what works for me

Spanjaard Tackle Protector or WD40 ~

  • Wash sparingly with water [/*]
  • Wipe reel clean after every outing, dry and spray generously with either Spanjaard/WD40 and....[/*]
  • Bag your reel.[/*]
  • Dont keep your reel secured to your rod all the time (remove it after evry outing)[/*]
  • Store reel with drag loose and freespool lever un-cocked![/*]
  • Open periodically to check for grit and or sand within the casing etc.[/*]
  • Keep reels free from sand.

I sometimes travel/walk with a fertiliser bag in my tackle box. I use this as a ''blanket'' below my tackle box, it makes a nicer cleaner area to access your tackle box and keeps sand from your tackle ~ especially your reels.
