Dont waste your cash, i had a Silstar (cant remeber the model) had a level wind , that i bought for R399 at Midas, lasted about 4 months, the level wind broke it the first 3 weeks, the gear ratio is only 4:1:1, i would rather suggeust you get yourself an Okuma theres a magetex thats 6:1:1 for R599 at Midas

Funny, i have a smaller Silstar grinder that i have used plenty off my old ski, caught fair size smoothhounds and leeries on, and that thing hasnt given up the ghost yet. She has gotten stiff at times and a few drops of oil has loosened her up. Of course you cant compare her to better brand names, but then the price is less. In the long run one of the better brands will last longer though.

Hi guys,

Patrick, your right. It's not the best, does the job and if you look after it, should last.
Even a 5k reel will die if it's not properly maintained.

Wanne bet ... ?

This Shimano Tiagra spent about 2 years in the sea ... and after some work was back in perfect working order.

see http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=21669&forum_id=45
Hi Neil,

The Tiagra in question was under the water, so their would have been very little oxygen and therefore very little electrolysis and limited corrosion.
This reel would also only work after some maintenance, I have also repaired quite a few reels that have been fished out the sea, it's actually more common than you think.

It's a good thing that the reel wasn't made with nickle plated brass, like the old Penn reels, otherwise there would have been nothing left of it.

Oh, the mussels in the picture have good taste, only going for the AFTCO guides on the rod. I wonder why they didn't attach themselves to the reel.

Maybe the guys at Shimano have a special mussel proof coating!

Hi Guys,

My first reel was a Silstar, I still have it and it still works like new, it's about 20 years old.
But i have kept it well, I'm sure if I never did the trouble to maintain the reel it would have been broken by now.

Servicing and replacement of worn parts is very important.
