I think the fantastic thing about the statement is that the knowledge comes freely and willingly. It the sum total of a few thousand years of knowledge. Maybe in the future one could publish a " SEALINE GUIDE TO SALT AND FRESH WATER ANGLING ' complied by 100000 members of Sealine SA.

A gilly (or however you spell it) is usually the guy on a boat who helps out guest anglers tie their traces, untangle knots, gaff fish, etc, etc.  A charter boat team is usually made up of a skipper and a gilly, but I notice fewer gillies around these days as charter boats try to take more paying clients on their boats each trip.  Commercial ski boat fishermen also sometimes refer to their crew as gillies. 

And as also quite rightly said, the term gilly is also commonly used in the Transkei for those helpers who offer their assistance and local knowledge for a small fee to visitors to the area.  When visiting the Transkei you can hire a gilly for a day for roughly R50 to R100, who will collect bait for you, show you all the good spots, help carry your tackle, etc.  Some of these guys are really great fishermen in their own right.  I remember on one trip down to PSJ a long time ago, the gilly actually caught more edibles than us, albeit with tired old tackle that his clients have handed dow to him over the years.

Not sure where the term gillie originated from, but all the other explanations seem to make sense.
