Hi Guys

Im primarily a bass fisherman but Im looking for a dropshot outfit for a trip to Moz in March.

Can you guys recommend a good setup.  Rod & Reel.

What size jigs should i start buying and what plastics are the plastics of choice.

Your experienced advice will be welcome.

Thank
Ryan

Shimano Stradic 5000 fj filled with 30lb Power Pro on any good 8 or 9 foot rod. I have an 8'6 Exceler XH and works nicely.

My next setup would be the above, but with a Berkley Air Extreme 9'.

Make sure you use PROPER leaders. A 3kg kingy will snap 30lb leaders easily on the rocks.

30lb Power Pro will handle most fish from the side. I don't like using fluoro leaders, too difficult to knot. Just get some decent 30lb, 50lb and 80lb mono. I make my leader about 1.2m so that it doesn't go through the eye of the rod.

As for baits, 1/2 and 1 ounce jigs with 5" minnows in blue-ish and pearl colours will be fine for most situations. Get a packet or 2 chartreuse minnows as well. Get plenty jig heads and baits!

Also, get some 1/2, 1 and 2 ounce bullet spoons (like iron candy or PLine) for when the wind is blowing. They cast a mile. Get 3+ of each, you don't want to run out of baits when in Moz. I don't like the coloured ones too much, silver is fine, with a few blue/chartreuse spoons.

Where are you going?

Yes, braid as your main line with a 1m mono leader...
Just get a finger guard as you can cut yourself when casting braid the whole day. Not fun casting for hours with an open cut!!

Update:

I have acquired a 9' Diawa Exceler Saltwater rod paired withn an Exceler 4000e. Fairly well balanced.

Now need to arrange some braid and jigs and baits...

I have the Exceler plus and am throwing it away as soon as I get my Stradic. Nice reels but it won't handle a 10kg fish all too well... Make sure you set your drag BEFORE you start fishing and don't touch it EVER while fishing. Test it with a scale if possible.

If you are going to Zona Braza you will have a ball! I haven't been, will hopefully go there in November. But my friend got 30 plus kingies a day there, up to 5.5kg.

Make sure you buy Power Pro 30bl braid, by far the best braid I have fished with. And remember some mono leaders (30lb is the minimum you should use, trust me).

Thanks Pershond, ja what can you do, Im sure the reel will be ok. Just couldn't afford the stradic.

Will definitely look into the Power Pro 30bl braid if i can find it in CT.

Please can you ask for more info from your mate regarding the lures he used. Areas he targeted. What time of year did he go? I would appreciate all info as possible. Need to make the trip worth while.

Best times should be November to March if you want to catch big GT's. The smaller kings will be there year round. They went in September and had a ball.

Look on Google Earth, there's 2 reefs parallel to the shore. At low tide you can wade to the front reef and fish from there. High tide - fish between the reefs. Early morning/late afternoon is always best for bigger fish.

Also, ask the owner to take you to his sectet spot with the 3 reefs...

And try to go there over spring tide (new moon).

Apparently you don't really need to cast too far there. Any blueish green 5" minnows on a 1/2 - 1 ounce jig will work (Culprit makes an awesome colour for Moz). And chartreuse. And take some bucktail jigs as well.
