Hi guys Im planning a trip to Bloemhof nature res

Hi guys

Im planning a trip to Bloemhof nature reserve for the big Flatheads end October, does anyone know when they start to spawn at Bloemhof and are they taking bait while spawning??? , also where is the best spot  on the nature resever side as most of it is flats and we had to waid 200m last time to get to deeper water.

Any advice would be appreciated

i havent been there in ages. Round the corner it gets deeper quicker...

Also next to the one fence near the caravan part there is a deeper hole closer in.

Do not think the big flatheads won't be in the shallow water. Water could still be a bit cool in october and they might move into the shallower areas to feed, especially at night.

My mate was there this weekend and only managed one cat of 5.5kg and about 80 carp in 3 days. Ive been fihing for cats 3 weekends in a row now and not one fish to show.lol.. water is still a bit to cold but i think from this week onwards the wheather looks better and the water will warm up nicely. Will give it atleast till the end of this month.

Well, lets hope the water heats up before end of October i have promised some Guys that they will brake there PB at bloemhof???? i hope there is no competitions at that time of year.

Cheetha FS do you live close to the dam??? sounds like you are fishing it often...

Do you know when the Cats start spawning there?

What would your recommend for bait???

Sorry for all the questions, i have only visited the dam once before!!!!

Closeish about 2 hours away.lol.. The cats will start spwaning assoon as the water temp reaches a sertain temp. Skuimkop can maybe help out here. The best bait would be a resident fish that is very easy to catch and is called the grasscarp. Check some of the previous bloemhof posts. The grassie head has some nice oils inside so make a small hole ontop of the head and also cut away the gillplates and leave some of the guts intackt. Will also be going there soon now as i need the mother of all cats on my line soon!

In big dams i like to use my 14ft rodds as i like to look for deep holes and they are useualy more then 300m out. This gives me more pulling power and keeps my braid or mono out of the snaggs. In rivers (depends on the width) i use either 2ft Elbe rodds or 2x Sentation rockets 12ft. Works whell for me.

Hi

groetnis Jakes

Moenie worry oor spawn tyd tydens Oktober nie. Inteendeel ek glo Oktober maand is die beste tyd om groot babers te target. So gaan en geniet dit.

The 2 Africast rods that were out were a 12' Carp rod and a 8' light spinning rod so neither were for Catfish

12' Spod rods are a very good bet or a 9-10' European Wels Catfish styled rod. Depends if you are casting or dropping baits.

I use V-Max 5lbs Spod rods as I fish 40-50lbs braid with 0.60mm leaders and with this I can cast a 3oz with a 100-150gr bit over 80m and further with smaller bait and I can put the heat to a Cat when he's on

Of the boat or dropped baits then I use the 8' PE6 that we custom build for Cats as it can be used for bait and for casting with medium and large pumpkinseed lures.

On the VMax with the head of a 1.8kg Grass Carp
