Hi Guys,

I'm needing some help please & would appreciate any advice. My 1990 "Hyperama special" rod & reel is kaput. I think it maybe caught me 5 or 6 fish in it's lifetime.

I've got two nice coastal trips planned this year (Port St John's in Aug & Morgan Bay in Dec) & I'm looking to get a Rock & Surf outfit. It would be used maybe once a year on average so there's no point in spending crazy money but in the same breathe I'd like something that will last. "The bitterness of poor quality...is long remembered after the joy of a low price"

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I have heard those "Baitcaster" type reels are a bitch to cast but once you get the hang of it - they good. Or would a decent coffee grinder also suffice.

I target "fish" & am happy with anything I catch. If it's edible it's a bonus.

Regards,
Neil :fishn

First of, rather by the bottom of the range from a reputable manufacturer than the top of the range model from the cheaper brands. I would say that a 12ft meduim rod with a grinder is a fairly good al rounder, but it's depends on what you want to target and where.

Best of luck making a choice.

Oh yes, when it comes to fishing line, buy the best you can afford. Don't skimp on the line....the line connects you to the fish.

I would strongly suggest that you go and visit Enigma and get a custom rod build, it is not that expensive!
This man will listen to you and build a rod that will suit your casting style as well as the fact that it is superior quality and will last for years, yet not breaking the bank. Get a decent grinder with braid and you will be set for a number of years.
In case you are not sure about the custom route go and visit a few angling shops in JHB like MIas and others, price rods and then you will see why I suggest the custom build.

If I was you I'd look at getting a Blue Marlin Distance Else combined with a Shimano Aerlex grinder. If you gona use this combo once a year why spend the time struggling to figure out how to cast a multiplier? Put on some braid and bionic finger and you're a for away. Will handle most eds.

Hey Spool Song

Thats a very small frying pan in your avatar.

On a serious note that is a BiG Dassie/Blacktail/Kolstert.

@ WackWack
As far as the fishing equipment is concerned Enigma would be the best to contact if I was in your shoes.

Even the most serious fisherman have difficulties in deciding what to get. There are just so many variations on the shelves today.

Dang, you found me out. I had to have it specially made by the people of Luliput to suit the average size fish I catch::S
