Hi guys..if anyone including admin could pls help on this topic.. "does chummin the water work for the surf angler targeting big game fish?" 1) how much chum do we use?
2) Wat should it be made off?
3) How long does it take to attract the big game?
4) Do tides,wind or time off day matter?
5) Any other advantages or disadvantages off this method to better fishin?

Yes it does work...but you also attract sharks! (Big Game) When the sharks come the other fish leave. Usually one digs a hole about 70 cm or so deep as the tide is coming in. You can use sardines chopped up and all mushy, this works well. As well as left over bait, squid insides or anything that has a pungent smell. Put into the hole and cover up. As the tide comes in the water will reach the hole. With the action of the waves it will take the smell as well as the oils (blood and stuff) into the water, thus attracting fish into the area.

Thanks for the interestin feedback big guns.. My other query was wether animal blood from a poultry or abbatour would work as well since there are quite a few locally in an around durban.. An would a 25lt bucket be enough?..

i understand that when the big sharks arrive all the edibles are going on immediate holiday but i am targeting the sharks an rays so its well worth it...

Animal blood from a poultry or abbatour would work, especialy if its a few days old. (that could be a mission *grin*) If you looking at using 25l drum, I would go maybe a little deeper and maybe make two holes, about 20m-30m apart, that way you would cover a greater area. ohh and always throw in some sardines for good measure:).

 

Sound like a lot of prep going into this trip! Listen you might also wanna check you local tackle shop i have seen a chum concentrate a while ago came in a 1lt bottle, but i have no idea as to what its called. I can only imagine that it must be really deadly!

Hope there arent any bathers on your beach!;)

Well if there any bathers on the beach they better keep 2 eyes out on the water!...anyways blue lagoon is a non bathing beach..so they have been warned.. The fishin has been very quite at blue lagoon recently..so maybe some sharks will boost the fishin..it'll be good to see some light tackle fishermen get peeled off by the biggest fish off their lives! Makes good memories! Lol..

lol...Listen you should try a place called rockert heart in durban its near the virginia airport. Also remember to use a steel trace of about 2m or so. Cos if you got a hook up and the fish turns and his tail touches the line then you are covered. We dont want any big ones getting away like that....that will always leave you wondering! lol

Well its has become thru experience to always use a full metal jacket trace with 200lb wire an 2/0 power swivels..all crimped together...thanks for the advice though..btw rocket hut in virginia has been washed away by the high seas last week..its gonna take a month or so for the place to become fishable again...

Hey guys..........chasin sharks!!! I believe that a few have been picked up at Tinley Manor high rocks. The water looks pretty deep there. A few garrick have also come out in that spot.

What type and  size sharks were they catching ?!

Another important note, is the weight of the sinker be matched to the size of ur bait. Like Blade said, a dead bait requires alot of shaking but rem sometimes we have to reel in the slack and shake again to get the bait out. If the sinker is to light, its gonna keep on moving.

Well this trip is still being discussed...lets jus wait for everyone to finish fasting first an everyone 2 be available..then its gonna be lines in an screaming ratchets!..any help u with regards to effective chummin will be much appreciated!
