Hi Guys

i often collect my sea lice during the afternoon to be used at the crack of dawn the following day.i normally keep them i a container in the fridge-not in water or sand. although dead, they seem to still be good the following day.

Has anyone attempted to keep them longer than a few days....in wet sand or by freezing them?im very interested to hear various methods, such a good bait and i hate wasting them.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Okay little secret here let lose.

If you collect your sealice there is no need to take it home at all .

Just say you have collected your lice and you are at your spot. You just get some newspaper atleast 5 sheets doubled soak in sea water and take your luice and wrap them in it make sure the n/paper is soaked properly. Dig a whole not too deep but til u get to the wet sand and bury them in the newspaper there. If near a structure use it as your marker ( like a bin or so)

Your lice should stay alive , just dnt bury them to deep as the pressure from the ground will crush them ..

Navz, you are 100% correct,i freeze sealice / cracker in sea water and they say fresh until the day i use them (regardless of the months) once they are defrosted and you are at the beach change the water.I have caught plenty on pompano's using this method. I find newspaper makes the bait black and pup.... :alien

Different strokes for diff folks i guess, what works for you works for you . Never really thought of freezing them, but guess i will try it. Nothing too loose hey ...

For the newspaper method should have mentioned just to keep over night or for a few hours as they stay alive well ...

hey peer

not too sure on sea lice in the durban area, i do all my fishing in zululand.as far as i know they are plentyful through to the transkei so i presume most durban beaches should have decent populations???

Last year from Jan 09 to May 09 i caught about 15 pompano's ranging from 2kg to 10kg.

The size hook i used was a Mustad Big Gun Size no 2.

What i normally do is take the shell off the sealice, put the hook though the lice then bind with latex cotton. Then take two mud prawns and place them where the shell was and bind again.

You will catch any edible ranging from bonefish, blacktail, bronze bream,stonebream,cape/natal stumpnose, grunter ect.....

cheers

Howzit Jude,

I see your favorite fishing spot is Cave rock is that the one by South pier?

If it is i love that spot, the bronze bream and blacktail are their in there dozens.I never have a problem for live bait.

And when it is low tide it is still deep.

Group 5's contract is completed next week the 25 February. Therefore we are waiting to see if the piers open for fisherman.

Cheers
