Hi Guys i need some help. Been reading up on rietvlei and ive been there twice but just in the day and blanked both times. I know its a very "TUFF" dam and im gonna be camping there often  as im living very close to the dam.

I need help on what bait to use? Feeding strategy?:fishn

The best spots at rietvlei?:ifishin

From what i've heard the best fishing time is 1am-4am? is this true?

I hope 2 get a new PB before the end of winter.:wfish

Just 2 be clear it will only be specimen carp sessions with the odd barble rod when the water isn't to cold::S

Hi,

Rietvlei is one dam you wil need to put effort in to find the fish, because if they arent infront of you, you wont catch them.

There are certain areas to target during the different seasons, and bait wise i would use a mix fo tigernust and maize with hemp.

Hookbaits you use tigers/maize and flavours that work well is mixed berry,sweetcorn and peach.

Try to fish your rods at different depths and areas untill you get consistent action, then move all your rods into that area. But for day sessions only you wil really have to know the dam, I have fished it for roughly 4 years and i dont think that i would try a day session, although on some days when you do find the fish some magical stuff can happen.

I mid june i had 19 fish for the day, and that was just down to being lucky on finding them.

Hi Mario.

There are a couple of guys here on the forum that might have more experience than me on said venue.

According to me this is one of the most challenging waters in and around Gauteng. Bait and baiting strategies are the least of your worries. Find the correct palce toi drop a bait and you will catch something. It sounds much easier than it is. Due to the fact that you cant use a canoe or inflatable you will have to bring your A-game. Get the feature either by baitboat or by marker float and you will be rewarded generously.

If you want to go and try it without a marker setup or baitboat, well good luck. The grass is still a problem and will be for at least two months.

This water can make or break you as a carp angler and would suggest less challenging venues for the novise angler.

But what the heck. At the end of the day its time next to the water and hopefully you get that pb. Keep us posted and good luck

Thanks for the info. Like you say i dont take a blank to serious as i still enjoy time by the water more then in the city. I guess even a bad angler has to catch something eventualy... hehe. If it wasn't for me living so close i would not have tried it as i am a novice when it comes to specimen.
If i blank hell it wont be the 1st time and not the last :fishn

Are the green areas good places for me to try and drop my lines? the red spots will be where im going to camp. can anyone advise me on fishing the purple area? any luck?

When you say mixed berry, sweetcorn and peach do you mean using plain tigers and maize dipped in the martin louw Mixed berry ect?

About the dips yes, you can also leave the plaint giers and maize in them to soak up the flavour even more, for spots you just need to find something interesting with the marker float.

The best advice i can give you is too pitch up before sunrise at the dam, and look for rolling fish, you will probably find fish all over but try to find a group were there are more fish present in an area, then try and see what you find on the bottom in that area, but only do that after your session else you will chase the fish away!

This is a 8.5 the biggest for me so far

Nice visse Mario, enige raad wat jy my kan gee oor rietvlei ? ek wil die paasnaweek da gan sit.. diepte gehengel, hook baits asook voer? waar het jy gesit?

Manne rietvlei het nou baie klein vis, die roumers loop sterk dat daar trokke vol klein karp afgelaai is.

Die manne wat conventional fish kry moer baie klein karp en geelvis so probleem nommer een is om oor n naweek n plek te kry.

Diepte hang als af van waar jy sit.

As jy nuut is by die dam sal ek die sloep aanraai.

weereens enige aas werk, enige voer werk maar jy LOCATION is belangrik.

Begin soet of sterk geure as hoekaas as jy eers n paar vis wil land en confidence bou voor jy dalk plain wil fish

As jy plek wil kry oor die paas naweek moet jy al so 2 dae voor die tyd daar aankom om plek te kry.
