Hi guys,i got a question on my mind and its late at night and i cant sleep so im posting it..lol,does bending the wire of the grapnel sinker helps 2 hold the sinker firmer in the sand when sliding a bait,if youl have a look at the january issue of the esa mag u wil see that raymond has a plastic container with his sinkers and some are bent..in bending i mean that each wire is bent up..i have tried it and it seems to make a huge difference,what is yr input on this guys,much appreciated

You have to bend the wires out to get the sinker to grip in the sand. I bend the wires straight when I pack them away, to save space.

Beding the wires also helps when targeting flat fish in that when the flat fish settles on the sinker the sharp points dont jab ut and chase it off - thats the only reason why I can see

When storing sinkers away i also pull al the wires near together so it takes less space,when using them i stretch the wires as you mentioned,but ay bending the wires i take a plier n bend each wire,in other words i bend each wire about 5 cm,so that each wire is facing the upward toward the sky..

Hey SharkA

Nice to have met you on Sunday and hopefully you'll join us at our next outing with rod in hand.  Two schools of thought exist on this issue:

 

1.  Bend the tips of the wire in order to secure more grip

2.  Keep the wires straight and bring it as close to the sinker as possible.  Rodbuilder does this and seems to work brilliantly for him

 

I find that keeping the line close to the ground after casting also makes a big difference as you are inherently lifting the sinker when you rod is held high.  Another key point is to always wait a couple of minutes to let some sand settle over your sinker before sliding.  My 2cents

Very true and good advice, I found that by opening up the wires in the normal way does allow the sinker to be lifted easier. On the other hand if you bend about 20 mm of the tip again it definately gives bore bitting power you will feel this when you want to pull up you sometimes have to pull quite hard to loosen the sinker. When I slide big baits on a 10 oz grapnel I bend the wirepoints and it HOLDS. Thats my experience. will post a pic with bend tips on a 10 oz so you can see what I mean.

Have found this to be the best way to get better grip on my sinker. the other one is bend close for storage.

Kom nou, dis nie so vêr nie, daai pajero laat dit mos vinning verbygaan.

Dink net, dis raggie tyd, wat van 'n bus van so 180kg om die armspiere te laat werk. En daai blink nuwe trollie het nodig om ingewy te word. Dis belangrike navorsing........

I must agree with you,thats exactly how i bend the sinker wires,i must agree with u that it work wonders,thankz for the pic.

Have found that if you sraight stick a tight sinker after you turn the mainline over your hand on the rod grip and slowly walk backwards you almost always get it lose.

The strech in the line normally proves to be too much fot the biting sinker and it comes lose, but then you must wind boet or it gets stuck again!!
