Hi guys, I am new here, and to the boating world.

I recently bought a Yamaha Explorer 510 CC, with an extremlely stiff steering. I ordered a new cable and installed it, only to find the coupling on the helm side does not click in place, and it jumps out when turned full lock to the port side. The difference between the old and new cables can be seen on the photo (old one on the right).

Am I doing something wrong should it fit? I cant find any markings to id the old cable brand. Thought these type of cable connections are all universal, especially because the dealer didnt ask much questions ,other than the length.

Any advice will be appreciated.

As far as I can recall, the cable on the left is designed to be held in place with a screw matching up to the circumference of the "notch" on the cable. (Well at least that's how one of my helms was).

By the way you described your dilemma, the old one "snapped" into place against a sprung clip. This would explain the cable having a square rather than round retention indentation. Fitting the cable with a rounded retention indentation that is designed to mate with a square indentation will pop the clip out when it's under pressure.

Try and withdraw the clip that held the old cable in place and see if it has a square profile.

or, just fit and drill the holes to fit the screw.

if done in this fashion, then your next cable would fit without modifications.

Thanks for the replies guys- will try drilling, alternatively will have to replace helm to match quick connect system.
