Hi guys

How do these things work. I know you connect to a GPS, but how does it work in terms of physical steering. What electronics are required, motors, additional mechanisms etc?

Also what are the costs involved, installation etc.

These might be stupid questions if i'm sitting the pot miss.

I want a Auto pilot!!!!

They basically have a "brain", the controller. The controller uses information from the GPS and a censor mounted on the steering link by the motor. The sensor tells it where the steering is. The controller activates a hydraulic pump which is connected to your steering system and actuates the cylinder.

Hi

I have a Raymarine auto pilot. The cost plus instilation was R25k. It works of the gps (Lowrance) or you simply activate it on your course. When activated your steering is deactivated thus you cannot turn manually while the auto pilot is activated. You will need a hydrualic steering and there should be very limited movement on the motor links otherwise the autopilot will tend to over correct.

That is the advantage of Garmin with it's shadow drive system
